The two things are quite different. I'm not sure there is much of an excuse for being rude, but one may hate cops because one had a bad experience with them.

Because of the constant danger and uncertainty that officers deal with, they have to treat everyone with a suspicious and dominant attitude. So those that are innocent feel mistreated even though the officer is only doing what's in his best interest and safety. Then of course, criminals hate cops because they're guilty and would be able to do anything if the police didn't exist. I've found that if you aren't doing anything wrong, and you treat cops with honesty and courtesy you either a) Will not have any problems with them-- or b) Never even be in contact with them. Either way, I don't expect cops to be my friend, I expect them to lock away the filth of the world by whatever means are most effective and safest to them.

Because so many cops are rude and unfair to many people.

It's a vicious cycle of cops treat some innocent people bad, so then some people treat some innocent cops bad, the next thing you know you have a vicious cycle of discrimination from both sides.

Then you have hard headed people who blindly defend ALL cops without seeing the fact that many are crooked, and then other hard headed people who blindly defend ALL civilians as if they're all saints as well. There's some good and bad on both sides, and they need to be exposed and dealt with.

Cops have to do their thing according to "Probable Cause" even if it is a out and out lie. I dont know about you but I sure do not like being falsly accused unless I did the crime. Even if one cop knew a person was innocent they still harass and win because they say so

Many people just seem to have a problem with anyone in an “authority position”. Another point to consider is during the course of his/her working hours, most police officers are dealing with criminals. If these people do not respect the laws, I don’t think we can expect them to be polite.

Because they weren't in the proximity of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 when the rest of us observed NY's finest sacrificing their lives to rescue people. That goes for the NYC firefighters too (340) who their lives. Maybe some of the cop haters ought to
stop acting like armchair "gang bangers" and grow up...

Almost every cop has an attitude! I only ever met ONE that did not. They see and deal with a a lot of terrible stuff. The spectrum runs the gamut of doing CPR on dead babies to seeing women take back men that have abused them to being shot themselves. Do I miss it? I am very glad I am not there anymore because I hated myself! I wore a badge for 19 years.

Police officers, by definition, represent repression, control, restriction, etc. I don't care how nice the police officer is there are just some people who do not like authority figures.

Also, police are the long arm of the government and not too many people like the government.
