hi, i want to go from london to edinburgh for the weekend starting the 13th october (my birthday). accomodation is fine, it's travel i'm concerned about. what is the best way for me to travel in order to keep costs down but also to allow me to spend as much of the weekend there as possible? i can probably take off half day of friday 13th and all day of monday 16th if necessary but would prefer not to. i've looked into a few things; i notice the megabus overnight on the sunday is very cheap, but is it comfortable?! trains on sunday the 15th take about 7 hours which isn't ideal. any advice?

It's a shame you didn't plan this earlier because travelling on a first class cheap train ticket is pure bliss (book it for next year!)

I am another person voting for flying - not very environmentally friendly but far and away the best in my opinion. I do it regularly the other direction to visit London; I would recommend Heathrow because the tube goes straight there... but you will know that better.

The airport in Edinburgh is about 20 minutes bus-ride into town I don't think they have a rail link yet. But there will be frequent buses.

Have fun! You'll love it. I recommend the Museum of Scotland - it's free and essential!!

quickest way to travel is to fly and there are some cheap flights on offer if you can find them. I live in Edinburgh and when I travel to London i always use the train. Can get trains that only take 3 1/2 hours. Investigate your rail options cause there are a few different trains available and lots of different prices! Good luck and enjoy your trip up here!

have done them all,... train, stage coach & plane

Coach takes forever about 10/12 hrs if i remember correctly it is very uncomfortable and you cant really sleep, the train is very stuffy and will take around 7/8hours if your lucky...The first time i went by train ended up being on there for 12hours due to some break down.

The plane is the best your flight is about 1hr 15mins, as soon as you are on your off again. You can pick up cheap flights. I was in scotland in july, I paid £69.00 for a return back to heathrow.

No dout fly ever time.. Enjoy your trip

Definately do not drive!! It takes about 8 hours from London and is not fun -especially if its raining. The train isnt too bad. It takes about 5 hours, but flying is defiantely the quickest!

I've done the megabus from aberdeen to manchester a few times it does get boring but is actually comfortable enough to sleep on ( they use coaches) but my advice is if going megabus is take something to eat with you take plenty juice/ water with you as they dont stop at any service stations take your ipod or radio or something to keep you amused I usually take my portable tv but overnight tv is crap!

I would avoid taking the night bus if you can. I have taken the night bus twice, once from Manchester and once from Stoke, both to Edinburgh, and it is hell! Try and fly if you can, it is the easiest and quickest.

Have a great birthday, and enjoy your weekend in Edinburgh.

Train with GNER book in advance and it won't be too much, won't take too long and you will be treated to the most spectacular view from a train window in Britain between Newcastle & Edinburgh. Not to be missed.

Do a one way car rental, it's a great drive, enjoy the weekend and fly back. Don't forget to climb the Scot Monument and visit the castle.

well my freind if you think 7 hrs on a train is a long time don't even think about the Megabus. with other pick-ups or drop-offs driver changes meal stops comfort stops you will not like it.
