I have a real problem with the sexist undertones in Disney movies of the past. Impressionable little girls don't need to be taught that if they are pretty and perfect enough, they may be lucky to reach the ultimate achievement in life - getting a man. Ugh!

I think a lot of them are make for adults as well as kids. In Shrek 1 and 2 there are things there that are more for the adults than the kids. For example:
Shrek 1 Lord Farquard is sitting in his bed talking to the Magic Mirror and the mirror shows Princess Fiona and Lord Farquard peeks under his blanket quick, puts it back down , then smiles.
Shrek 2 When the wolf, gingerbread man, and Pinocchio where trying to save Shrek and Donkey, they told Pinocchio to tell a lie and say"something crazy, like you're wearing ladies' underwear". He says it and nothing happens. They ask him, "are you?" He says no and his nose starts to grow and they pull them up above his pants for everyone to see.
But I have seen that in a lot of scenes kids laugh too, but for different reasons. I think that it's alright. We own Madagascar and my kids have said a line or two that seemed more "adult oriented" and my husband and I have told them that it wasn't appropriate to say and they usually won't repeat it. Incidentally, their favorite part is when Alex, Melmen, Marty, and Gloria happened on the lemurs and their party and scares the little one.
I believe for the most part the movies are okay~although if I am unsure about a movie I will go see it first to make sure.
God Bless!!

No, they're not. I have also noticed. Take for example: Toy Story 1 & 2, Shrek 1 & 2 and especially The Cat in The Hat. I was appalled by that movie. I took my son to see it and he went to school and used the "B" word that he learned from the movie. The "children's movies that are made today are not for children. I do not take my child to the movies anymore. I wait until it comes out on DVD. I preview the movie first before I let him watch it.

I think it is a combo of both. They make them for the kids, but knowing the parents or grandparents are going to be watching it with them. So, the add in little things for us to "get" and unfortunatly our children are so smart nowadays, they pick up on the little sayings more so then the adult does. I do agree that they need to chill on the name calling and violence in them. They need to be making sure to be trying to teach kids valuable lessons in these movies, not just ways to get even. I would prefer my kids to watch the Harry Potter movies then some of the Disney ones out there. But that is my personal opinion

I think that children's movies have been getting way too mature for the youth of today. The language in these movies is not very appropriate for young children and there is too much sexual innuendo. I think that this is the result of the movie industry trying to market to parents first and children second. Since the parents are the ones who have the money and are making the decision, they want to make movies aimed at keeping them happy.
An example: Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2-
Although this is one of my favourite movies, I would not take a young child to see it.
In the first movie Jack refers to Will as a "eunuch" (look that one up) and in the second Elizabeth makes multiple refernces to her wedding night...

well of course they are more marketed to adults than kids, like someone said before. parents are the ones with the money to buy, rent, or go to the movies. movies make the most money in theatres, so its ideal to get the parents to take their kids... but parents arent going to want to sit there for the hour+ just watching a movie made for kids. I know that you know thats why they have the adult jokes in those movies...
i wish they had a service where kids 5+ could go to the theatre and watch a movie/be babysat... and the parents could go see a movie of their own.

I think that children movies today are VERY adult- I LOVE IT! It's hilarious. But that's how they've ALWAYS been. I watch movies now that I would watch when I was three or four and I'll find so many adult jokes that I never understood before. It's hilarious, because no matter what age, I can enjoy it because it all equals out.

i think they are made for kids raised in a permissive society that forces our kids to grow up too fast. i am keeping my kids away from most disney and pixar movies until age 8 or 10... some of the older disney movies (lady and the tramp, snow white, etc) are not as bad. for now i am sticking with clifford the big red dog, curious george, etc... stuff that's really made for little kids without the adult undertones.

If Madagascar was supposed to be children's movie - no! It was bordering on gross sometimes.
But then I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Nemo or Jungle Book are great movies for kids and very entertaining.

Nah, they're the same as they've always been. Actually, most have adult-oriented jokes now that kids don't get so it's funny to the adult but the kids are oblivious.
