I recently got a pistol permit in Connecticut (where I currently live), and a non-resident concealed carry permit in Pennsylvania (where I used to live and travel frequently). I am going to purchase a revolver than I can use for both target shooting in Connecticut and for hunting in Pennsylvania. However, I was reading New York State laws, and there is no provision for transporting a handgun through the state. You need a permit to transport a handgun, and can only get one if you are a New York resident. This effectively cuts off the entire Northeast from transporting a handgun to the rest of the country because you HAVE to drive through New York to get to Pennsylvania or New Jersey. No other state requires you to have an in-state permit to transport a handgun. Is this absurd catch-22 enforced in New York or does federal law prohibit its enforcement? Any case law examples would be helpful.

I take that last comment back. You can transport one through New York because the federal law that says you can transport a firearm from one place where you may legally possess it to another DOES supersede state law. (So long as it is locked, unloaded, and in the trunk.) Thanks people.

Federal Law requires the handgun to be in a locked box in the trunk of the car without ammunition

Your best bet would be to contact the New York State Police and ask them about it. I would imagine that if you put it in your trunk in a locked gun case there would be no issue. That is a very good question that I would love to know the answer to. But I would definately call the State Police and see what they have to say.

You can legally transport a gun through any state with this method: Store the gun unloaded in your trunk. If you don't have a trunk, keep the gun in a locked container out of reach of the driver.

it has to be in a locked case and it has to be unloaded. The case can not have any shells in it. The shells will need to be in another locked case. And these cases will need to be in the trunk.

Well I say that since NY, IL, CA, and Wash DC, have some of the most stringent hand gun laws in the land, and how safe those places are reflected by how few shootin..........oh wait, my bad. I was thinking of those states that have liberal CCW laws that discourage bad guys and gang members from pulling a gun on someone because they don t know WHO might be packing. And oh by the way.....that s also consistent with states that recognize the Constitutional rights of its citizens. Novel idea.

You legally transport it by not getting pulled over.

you should get a lawyer to find out what you need to do
and help you with whatever formalities. i know lawyers
are expensive, but getting caught would be even more
so.
