I realize that is their job but can you politely tell them you are just looking?

A couple of ways:

- walk right into the sales office and tell them you are just looking and when you need help, you will ask for the next available salesperson (they rotate thru the customers - first come, first served)

- politely ask the salesperson who accosts you for his or her business card and tell them you are just looking and will get right back to them if you need more info or want a test drive.

Lol at food stamps!!

Yeah... I have the same problem. It is very annoying, and not just when shopping for a car, but in general.

No, you cannot politely tell them to leave you alone, because when you tell them politely they don't understand. You've got to be straight with them. Normally I will say, "I am in fact looking for something, but I would rather you let me find it on my own. If I need help with anything, I'll be sure to give you a shout." Even if they think you are in a bad mood, who cares? At least it's better on your nerves.

Look on Sundays. Most people do. You would otherwise have to wear a "just looking" sign in the car dealership.
If you tell one salesman you are just looking, he may believe you and let you go, but another and another will try to sell you as long as you are there.

Give them no open end answers, i.e. " Hi, how may I help you today?" - "Just looking." or "Do you have a car/model in mind?" - "No."

Just give them an answer they can't respond to. Also, when buying a car, check www.kbb.com and look for the suggested msrp and what the car is actually worth. New and used I mean. Now a days because ppl test drive cars so much you're expected to see at least 30-50 something miles on a brand new car. So be sure to put in the amount in www.kbb.com.

Honestly, I bought two cars in my life at full price... after that I said forget it. I'd sit there day til night haggling prices. My mother-in-law and I just got a brand new honda van for under sticker price. The 3 hours is worth it. Besides, go in when they're getting ready to close (like 2hours ahead), sometimes it helps for they just want to hurry up and go home.

Be sure you know what you want, check the newspapers for special apr financings like 0% or 1.9% financing so you know what apr you're going for (sometimes the lower the apr means shorter period financing, beware of that too).

Know how much you want to pay a month. What would you like to pay that fits in your budget? $300? $350? $400? etc.

Know how much under invoice you want to under. The licenses and fees are about 10% of the msrp. So if the car is $25,000 the licensing and fees are going to be $2,500.

If you're buying a car that just came out (like '07's) I'm not sure how much you can to go under... maybe a grand or two... build a good bond and have them throw in trunk trays, floor mats, etc. But if the dealers are trying to get rid of 06's because the 07's came in, you've got a better advantage because they "want" to get rid of it. I'd go about 4-5 grand under msrp but I must warn you, you're going to be there all day and! it depends on the dealership on how bad they want to sell you a car.

Good luck haggling!

This is what you do, when he or she comes up to you. Tell him if you can have his or her business card, when he or she gives it to you, say I'm just looking. So when the next guy comes up to you, you already have a salesman. The rest of them will leave you alone, because they cant take that other person customer...

Tell him you are just looking, and if you need any assistance you will
ask him for it. Tell him you get very stressed easily.

If he comes back before you need him, or he is being pushy with you, take half an ALKA seltzer, put it in your mouth ( without him seeing) let the foam come out of your mouth, fall down on the floor
and shake alittle. do this for about 30 seconds, he will definitely leave you alone after that

...umm, try smacking him in the face yet?

lol, jk

i always wanted to try it though...but really

find a car sales place where prople dont pop out of bushes and all that as you walk up to the store (yes i have seen it happen many times)

Your sales person should be respectful and let you choose the car you want while being helpful to you.

my teacher went though many sales places looking for good salesmen to get his car and boy some of those stories......crazy...funny too

Sure. Say to him: I can't concentrate with you follwing me like a police officer. If and when, I make a decision, I will let you know, or, I will go to another dealer. They are obnixous because they want to make a sale.

you can but because they are paid on commission they probably are reluctant to leave you to your own browsing.

having them around can really help. they know everything about each car on that lot and if they don't they sure as hell can look it up for you.

they probably get in trouble if their boss catches them sitting on the job while there is someone out there looking at their vehicles.
