I have survived lung cancer, had one lobe of my left lung removed, but because they caught it early the surgery saved my life. Get it done kiddo, don't add one stupidity to another.

You're overly concerned. Even if you smoke, your chance of lung cancer is very low (and not that much greater then the general population).
However, whether you smoke or not, since so many things could potentially cause lung cancer, some doctors feel a periodic (every few years) chest x-ray after middle age is a good idea just to make sure.
And, yes, if you have lung cancer, your chances of survival are very good. There are now a range of treatment options available. But, like all cancers, early detection and treatment increases the odds of a successful outcome - a common justification for periodic x-rays.

My neighbor has lung cancer and is in the recovery process. Her cancer had nothing to do with smoking because she never smoked and her family does not smoke. No second-hand smoke involved.
I am a smoker for over 30 years and have a lung xray every year or so but so far no problems.

I don't have any information on lung cancer, but i do on emphysema, maybe your Doctor is also looking for other deceases other than cancer. You can slow down emphysema by not smoking again, but your lungs will stay deceased. As far a cancer there are some clinics that say they can slow down the process also. I rather know, because it will give you more years with your family and friends. I used to say the same thing until my husband got diagnosed with emphysema. So my friend take care of yourself if not for you do it for me, at least, even though I don't know you, I will know my answers do not go unread, and I do care for you as my sister in God.

Hey Suzy,, lung x-rays sound scary eh? Well they are, but you sound concerned already,, so why not go and make sure you DO NOT have lung cancer, perhaps what the Doctors are anticipating is something very minor. Either way, having it done makes you the winner. Get it done and see what you can do about shaking that stinkin habit eh?

It is no longer true that Lung cancer is untreatable - there are now many people who have had their lives extended by the modern treatments that are available.
Please give up smoking NOW - it is possible (having done so myself) and go for the X-ray as your doctor has suggested.

Go for the xray
And if you dont have cancer good ^.^
You might want to quit smoking or else you could get cancer eventually
My mom has smoked for about 20-25 years and shes now trying to stop cause shes got breast cancer
The docter gave her the strongest nicotine patch (21 mg i believe) and the nurse told her just to try smoking with it on
Itll taste so bad that youll eventually want to stop but remember to change the patch and everything
