We were restricted as kids on drinking it. Could only have it on Sunday with the family dinner. That was in the 60's. Plus, we never had Pepsi or Coca Cola. We bought ours from a local soda company in cases with bottles that had to be returned.

There is no one in my extended family from grandparents down to kids too young to say the word soda that wasn't raised on it. Only the little kids drink soda with sugar in it. Everyone else is on diet soda to avoid the sugar while still enjoying the taste.
