I searched for recipes with ala - and drew a blank. However I found casserole recipes with ale e.g. Beef and Ale Casserole. I am guessing - could it be ale and not ala?

If my memory serves me...I think it is a white powder, much like baking powder. You should be able to buy it at your local grocery store in with the spices or baking goods. I have never noticed it in the store, but recall my mother using it in some of her recipes.
Good luck.
