The life preserver story is an embellished myth. Originally the machine that made the candy had a minor flaw and left holes in the middle. What made the mints lifesavers was because of the flaw, child got one stuck in his throat, however the hole made it possible for the child to breath. At that point, it became the official candy for parents to give to their kids.

A similar shaped object that is used on ships to throw to people lost overboard is called a lifesaver that is where I assume the name comes from. As when you have the sweet it feels like a lifesaver to you.

they look like little lifesaver wreaths that the lifeguard would use on the beach.
The history behind the candy company, I don't know.
But sometimes those breath mints have saved a many a people from bad breath.

In Italy , the Company making this candy used an ad which went: the hole with mint around it. I think it was a nice ad, indeed. I don't know whether we are talking about the same kind of candies, but I think we probably are. Here we simply used to call them with their brand name, which is exactly the same for a kind of jumper or one part of the globe we live on!

From AskYahoo.com:
"Life Savers were invented in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland chocolate maker who wanted a sweet product that wouldn't melt in the summer heat. He decided on a peppermint hard candy in the shape of a circle with a hole in the middle. Since the mints looked like miniature life preservers, he called them Life Savers and registered the trademark."
