That's not a "fact", dingbat. There are plenty of atheists in foxholes.
As an atheist, I felt utterly confused. Why WOULDN'T an atheist fight for ideals and honor and the right to life and liberty and freedom? Those concepts don't come with a deity attached to them.
Honestly, after thinking about it, theists shoot themselves in the foot with that statement. They're saying that the only reason they're risking their necks is because they believe they have an afterlife safety net if it all goes bad.. they're basically admitting to being incapable of fighting on principal without fear and without a "heavenly back up plan" to put them at ease. What it demonstrates about the person who says it is that they wouldn't have the guts to lay their life on the line if they didn't have a supernatural blankie to cling to just as they (WRONGLY) assume is the case for atheists.
My husband was in the Air Force. He knew many agnostic, atheist and generally non-spiritual members. They were all prepared to put their lives on the line for their country WITHOUT the comfort of a supposed afterlife to keep them company.

Um.... yes, there are Atheists in a foxhole. I keep hearing that as soon as I experience a tragedy or a life threatening experience, I'll start believing in god. Well, my father and a close friend both died this year, and I was in a nearly fatal car accident a few months ago. And I'm still an Agnostic. Now, what does that tell YOU?

The idea that there are no atheists in foxholes is a valid argument against foxholes, not atheists.

That's a false statement. I'm sure it was out here that I saw a rebuttal to this....it was a link to a group of atheists who were indicating that they were alive, well, in a foxhole and STILL atheists. I'm too lazy to dig it up.
Wow, the person above me got it backwards. It's quite easy to believe what you're told (faith). The swimming upstream part comes in when you have to question yourself about every belief you hold, and prove them to be true.....

You stating that as fact would mean that you or someone with documented proof have personally been in every foxhole with every single person since the beginning of Christianity. Somehow I doubt that is possible.

There is truth in the statement as it stands however, when mostly often used it is being used as a parable.
A parable is a story in prose or VERSE that is told to illustrate a (perhaps covert) religious or ethical idea.
The idea being here is that many people, not all and not near enough, but still some angry lost souls find their relationship with their creator when faced with tragedy or death.
*****************************************************
Christians do not believe in God just so we won't burn in hell. If there were no heaven/hell I would still view the bible as a book of instruction for life & seek daily guidance from the Lord through prayer.Following the rules and principles he has set forth in bible has worked for me in terms of an over-abundance of wealth, health and happiness. He has cleared me of anger, fustration and past hurt. Broke my family of curses and blessed me with more miracles than I have room to list here. The root of the word Christian is "Christ-like". What did Jesus Christ do? He helped others. He was a servant. He washed others feet, which in his time was the lowest duty one could do. So true christians' main purpose is to be servants to others. To help people in need. Not just to bring others to the Lord.
So, the statement that we live only so we won't go to hell is not true. Anyone walking in the daily blessings of God will tell you the same thing. I am not perfect, I still struggle with sin but he continues to work on me and loves me unconditionally.
Religion (man made rules, laws and beliefs) has tarnished the image of who God is and pushed alot of people away. God is not a big angry man in the sky waiting to send you to hell or punish you for sin. God warns you of sin so much because he wants you to have a great life. Most of the things he warns you of are things that will bring despair on you eventually - Like the love of money. How many men are in Federal Prision because of the love of money? Please don't listen to what "religion" tells u about God. I won't name denominations. I was in one at one time. I am not now. Just understand the difference between true christianity and religion.
I know I rambled after the question but I know I was supposed to write this for someone. You will know who you are when you read this. (Boy atheist will have fun with this one....Go ahead ...I have a sense of humor myself!)

I don't think you recognize irony when you (attempt to) use it.
It might have been a good question if it hadn't sounded so ignorantly literal. You can't blame people or call them dingbats for taking you at face value.
Anyway, what your first answerer said.

Nope. It just tells us that people in foxholes will grasp at any hint of hope, no matter how unlikely. Sort of like the baseball player always wearing the same socks, if you ask me.
