I tried to pick my regular locks (key locks and combination locks) and I have not been successful.

I am just posting this question so I can learn something.

Depends on what kind of combo or key lock it is. E.G. an old S & G combo door or safe lock can easily be cracked by using a stethoscope due to the fact that the brass discs in the lock would develop a groove and you will get a click when it is in the "open" position. However, the newer digital combo locks are not that easy to crack and may take up to six hours of drilling and trust me, it's not fun. Key locks may be picked by using a key gun unless it causes the core to fall out then you may have some trouble. If you want to use the old lockpicks, then your best bet is to learn the various raking techniques or just kick the door in. BTW - I hope you're just an apprentice locksmith.

This lock, with 3 numbered dials, is easily opened with a brute force attack, by simply counting from 000 to 999. There are only 1000 possible combinations. I've opened locks like the one you referenced in under 30 minutes without any tools or aids, by simply counting... This thing is a joke. With many simple locks of this type, if you pull on the shackle slightly, and then turn the dials one by one, you will feel resistance, which will release when you are on the right number. If you feel for it, you can pop one of these cheapies open in seconds without knowing anything about the combination. A much better lock is the dial combination lock from Dudley. The difference between Master and Dudley is the locking mechanism which secures the shackle. Master is a spring loaded pin, while Dudley uses a hard pin. A Master lock can be "snapped" shut, while a Dudley uses the pin to rotate to engage the shackle. A Master can be shimmed to release the spring catch, but a Dudley can't, because the hard pin must be able to rotate into the slots in the combination disks to release the shackle. Disk combination locks can not be picked since the disks make no noise. There are no tumblers to make any noise falling into place as there are in many safe doors. The easiest thing to do with a combination lock is cut the shackle with bolt cutters. What you CAN do is determine number ranges by turning the dial and feeling for the notches. ONE of those places where you feel the notches is actually a slot, so you can determine the possible numbers by feeling for the notches as you turn the dial. You can eliminate all of the numbers between the notch points. Then, since you have narrowed the field by 2/3rds, use brute force on the remaining 1/3rd of the numbers. The best and hardest to crack are made by Sargent and Greenleaf and have a 4 number arrangement.

Get a paper clip and like bend it so one of the metel ends and go in the keyhole of the key lock. I don't know about the combination lock though. Sorry!

Hi. It takes skill and you can't have all the details, but you exert a slight twisting motion to the cylinder and move the split lock pins until they align. If someone even SEES you doing this there will be trouble. Even having the tools in your possession is against the law in most states.

combo locks are easier to explain how to pick, because you just use brute force tactics. you start at 0000, or however many numbers there are and go through every one. but there is a downside for this because if there is three numbers, there are 999 possibilites, and if there are 4 numbers there are 9999 combinations and so on, so it can take a long time.

good luck

i assume that what you are trying to pick is legal, because if it is not, then disregard the above information and head on down to your local police station and ask them...
