how do i convince my parents to get a dog? i want to get a small dog, like a maltese or cavalier king charles spaniel. my nanny doesn't like dogs but she just says that she is okay with it as long as she doesn't have to go near it. my parents already had a dog and they say that it is a lot of work and that i might not be ready. they claim i don't take care of my gecko! i DO pick up her poop and make sure she has food! ok, so i do have a pet, but she nocturnal, in other words, BORING!!!! please help me change their minds. it just kills me to see a dog, since i want one soo badly. and bye the way, they are stubborn! thanx

well a lot of parents alway say "youre not ready" or "you need to be more responsible" and stuff like that. but didnt u ask exactly why they aren't getting a dog? not enough time on their hands, too much work, grooming. my dad doesnt want a dog because 1) he dosent like animals unless theyre on his plate, 2) we travel EVERY year, and 3) the money issue. that may be some reasons or that ur parents think you have too many pets, their previous dog was too much work ect. maybe THEYRE the ones not ready. maybe they didnt have such a good experience with the previous dog. even small dogs arent half the work as big dogs. some smaller dogs require more care than the big ones!
to convince them, i suggest having a presentation. give some good examples of why you want a dog and how you will contribute to the care of it. do some more research on the breed and tell them both the pros and cons of that breed that u want. if that doesnt work then ur outta luck. and when ur outta luck, when you have a house, YOU get the dog with YOUR money, and that can be hard for a 21 year old when they just got outta college and just got their full time job!

Added: i suggest a short coated to bald dog. like a Chinese crested or a Calavier. Malteses need to be trimed every week or two, and can be quite a handful!

While Malteses are small, they require A LOT of work! I'm 20 and my fiancee is 21, and we're constantly busy w/our 3 month old puppy. She's awesome, but more work than our previous Rotties and Chows. They're very high maitnance and need tons of attention and care. They get sick easier, and are just a HUGE responsibility. If you want a dog, do your research, be responsible and show your parents you really want the dog. Good luck!

if their that stubborn ya gonna have to wait till ya leave home!!!!!! otherwise keep nagging-they'll eventually crumble just to shut ya up and you'll have your puppy. Cavaliers are very prone to diseases and maltese are high maintenance so you won't really win the parents over suggesting one of those dogs. If you going to go for a pure breed tell you'll get a bichon frise-no shedding of hair EVER so the furniture will be safe!!!and they are small.Else play with the heart strings9and do some good) and rescue a pup/dog from a pound!! they really need homes(if they don't, they are killed(put to sleep)! Parents won't be stubborn anymore!

as a parent i would say maybe trying doing some extra stuff around the house. show your parents that you are responsable.
also i would advise you into getting a pup that is low maintnese. a short coated breed, a maltese and spaniel require lots of work to keep them in good shape. they need to be brushed everyday, and have their nails done every few weeks.
its sad but we have to shave down just about every maltese that comes into the shop, cause they dont get the proper care at home..read up on all sorts of breeds and find out what you are really in for.

Do all the research on the kind of dog you are thinking of getting. different breeds have differing care specifications, you need to let your parents know that you know what needs to be done. Another thing you could do is to offer to watch a neighbors dog while they go on vacation, parents like it when you show how much you are willing to do to get what you want. Try to take on a little more respondsibility since thats just what another pet is...work. Don't however, suck up to your parents, I mean yes be polite but don't go to out of your way, parents just aren't that impressed by that kind of thing.

All I can say is act like you are responsible enough to have another pet,, then most parents will oblige.
