The answer is clearly written in the bible. god created man with free will man is not perfect like God therefore man fell into sin because of this God came as a man to overcome sin and to be tortured and die in the place of those who accept this as atonement for there sin. The comandments showed man his need for god and Christ came to fufill this need.God's chosen people of that time did not accept Jesus as the atonement for sin thus are still under the law. Christians accept Christ as God in the flesh who paid the penalty of law for those who accept it. Short version mush better version found in the Bible seek god in his word and through prayer and you can know him personaly.

Because if he exists, he's evil.
"God is omniscient. When he created the universe, he saw the sufferings which humans would endure as a result of the sin of those original humans. He heard the screams of the damned. Surely he would have known that it would have been better for those humans to never have been born (in fact, the Bible says this very thing), and surely this all-compassionate deity would have foregone the creation of a universe destined to imperfection in which many of the humans were doomed to eternal suffering. A perfectly compassionate being who creates beings which he knows are doomed to suffer is impossible."

Because He gave us Free will to do good as well as bad. We have a choice, and some of us choose to live righteously, and be obedient to God's commandments.

I don't get it either. Christians say we have free will, but also say god can see what we do before we do it and pretty much say god has already dictated our actions.

interesting question. i hope this doesn't determine your faith. i believe that he did this kinda because He felt like it. He gave us commands to see if we would follow Him. i'm sorry if this isn't helpful, and i hope it doesn't help you determine your faith. this is not something you should focus on, i would say mostly because He felt like it. blatant and simple.

Yet another inconsistency in religion...
If for his own glory, then he seems a rather perverse, egomaniacal sort of sadist...
