Religion has been one of the top causes of war throughout history, and still is today. Some religous teachings actually promote violence and war. But is there a religious leader who actually promotes peace, and do His followers actually follow Him?

The teachings of Christ are truly the teachings of perfect peace, but many who claim to follow Him do not really follow His teachings. There are many others who are also seeking the way of perfect peace,as was brought out here in your comments, I think we must be always seeking peace by seeking spiritually.First we must find the author of peace, then we must seek Him with our whole hearts. I see it as a journey out of darkness ,and into the Light. I want to keep this question open longer due to the importance of this subject. Thanks to all who took the time to comment.

Jesus Christ....

Mathews 5:38-48 "38 ¶ Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 ¶ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."..

Most of the religions preach peace. But even the early Buddhist history has war and violence in it's beginnings to include Tibetan Buddhist. Just remember that organized religion was a way to control the uneducated masses of humans. The only religion that has no violence and war is the current New Age religions to include Wicca. The pagan religions were the meek that were killed and destroyed throughout history. While the people persecuted the pagans in the name of their god by drowning, burning, torture and death the religions have still survived.

Try the Dali Lama!
I noticed some have tried to suggest Buddhism generally but a true Buddhist generalization is to have no fixed absolutes on peace as a polemic to strife.

The Dali Lama's Sect is dedecated to compassion and thus while the Chinese Mainland has expelled them from their country and capitol the Dali Lamea has not uttered one word against the detracters. Compassionate Peace takes great forebearence and one has to agree the Dali Lama has that!

As for the person who never heard of a Buddhist War, try the Itto and Lotus Wars of Japan!

Only One that I know of and that is Jesus Christ of Nazareth the Son of God, He as far as I know was the only one willing to turn the other cheeck.

But one can argue that Jesus was not a religious leader though many proclaim their religion to be the only true religion and will quote the Bible and Jesus' teachings till the cows come home, Jesus quoted what was already written from the beginning of time,we don't understand the whole concept and are striving to walk His way because He said, I am the Way , The Truth , and The Light. Peace be with you in your search for truth.

The true teacher of peace is the one who teaches how to free our mind from all illusions such as dependency on race, organized religion, politics and all ideas of divisiveness. There were true teachers like Christ, Buddha, Krishnamurti, Dalai Lama and many more. We the people cannot grasp the true essence of the teaching because we don't want to leave our selfishness. We don't want to taste the nectar of truth, we just keep on imagining the truth and that is phony.

I would have to say Buddhism. Even though most religions do promote peace, Buddhism is misconstrued for violence the least. I just asked a question in here about if a war has ever been fought for Buddhism and no one could name one.

The old oak tree really good friends with the weeping willow. Cause no man on earth a true religion. He is made out of goods and services sprinckled with greed.

Both Buddhism and Christianity teach peace. However neither of them seem to be that keen on following it when the political situation doesn't favor it. e.g America and Japan.
