he showed small little fits of rage before we found out he had ADHD, over the last few days I have noticed him throwing huge screaming fits and drawing back to hit people including me. Do I need to take him back to his Dr, or call a pysciatrist? Or, is there another solution to my problem?

Call your Dr and explain the symptoms to him. Only you and your Dr can decide what is best for your child and obviously this is not the answer. I am a peds nurse, and this happens for some children. There are different medications on the market if medication is the way you and your dr want to treat your child. Counseling and therapy can help whether you use medication or not. Do not let your child hit you. Make certain he knows that this is not an acceptable action. Do not hit your child back. If you need to stop your child from harming himself or others, you can try a "hugging" technique. Wrap your arms around your child holding arms down. Let the child know that as soon as he is able to control his actions he will be released. Be cautious about head banging and kicking. Reinforce to your child that you love him but his actions are unacceptable. Try time out or the 123Magic. Do a web search for this type of behavior modification. CALL THE DR NOW.

My husband takes Adderall and when he first started he got very aggressive and sometimes violent. I drug him to the doctor and the doctor lowered his dose for awhile and told us NOT to get the generic until he was used to it . My husband occassionally gets aggressive when there is a biochemical issue (not enough sleep, too much caffeine, etc.) we made up a code word when he got that way so he would just go take a break and not continue the confrontation.
With your child, take him to a doctor and explain what is happening but resist a change of med. It takes the body a long time to adjust to a new med. Explain to your child in a calm moment that: "Sometimes when you feel mad or feel like fighting you act like you want to hit. That is not okay and you ARE in control of what you do. When you act like that, it reminds me of an angry gorilla, an Angorilla. If that happens again, I will say, 'John put the Angorilla to bed.' and you will go to your room (or playroom, etc, a happy place) and imagine putting a big gorilla to bed. After your body calms down you will feel sleepy or lazy. When you feel sleepy, it is time to come and we can cuddle and talk." You will put this in your own words and make it fit you life but if will give him the power to regain control and save face. Some kids respond to the word (or another word) and some respond to a card with a funny picture on it or something else like a gag gesture.
Your child will have to work harder than you or me to control his energy and to see and understand non-verbal social cues. Medicine or no, help empower your child to build coping strategies to better able help himself. The more he feels and accepts that he is actually able to control himself, the better his self esteem and the better his life will be.

YOUR SWEET LITTLE BOY SOUNDS VERY UNHAPPY. ADHD CAN REALLY ONLY BE DIAGNOSED THROUGH A BRAIN SCAN. THAT IS REALLY THE ONLY SURE FIRE WAY TO KNOW. JUST LETTING U KNOW. IF THE DOCTOR DID NOT GIVE HIM A BRAIN SCAN THEN I WOULD MAKE SURE HE GETS ONE SO U WILL KNOW FOR SURE. I ONLY SAY THAT CAUS A LOT OF PARENTS DON'T GET THE BRAIN SCAN DONE. ALSO A LOT OF THE MEDICATIONS THAT THEY PUT KIDS ON FOR ADHD CAN CAUS HUGE EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS FOR THE CHILD. A LOT OF PARENTS REPORT THEIR KIDS TURNING INTO ZOMBIE LIKE KIDS. THE OTHER THING ABOUT THE RISING EPIDEMIC OF ADHD KIDS IS THIS. NUMEROUS STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT THE DIET THAT THEY ARE GIVEN CAN HUGELY REDUCE THE SYMPTOMS. THERE ARE CERTAIN FOOD YOU CAN GIVE HIM TO HELP HIS CONCENTRATION AND HYPERACTIVITY. WHEN I SAID HE WAS UNHAPPY IT MAY BE THAT THE MEDICATION IS AFFECTING HIM CHEMICALLY AND HE MAY BE RESPONDING TO THE CHEMICAL CHANGES. IF U HAVE NOTICED NEGATIVE CHANGES HOWEVER I THINK YOU NEED TO GO TO A DOCTOR. FITS AND RAGES ARE A SIGN OF LOSS OF CONTROL. WHETHER THAT BE DUE TO ADHD SUCH AS HOW HIS BRAIN WORKS AND HE CAN'T CONTROL IT. OR HE SIMPLY FEELS OUT OF CONTROL FOR OTHER REASONS.
I HOPE THIS HELPED YOU OUT. I WOULD ADVISE SEEING BOTH DOCTOR AND PSYCHIATRIST.
LOVE,

Hold the Horses here! Your regular pediatrician ordered these dangerous and addictive medications? Sorry, before I will allow MY SON to take Ritalin or anything else like that, he would have to be seen by a Doctor that specializes in child physcology at the VERY LEAST. ADHA did not even EXIST back in the 50's and 60's when I grew up.
Our Doctor tried to throw those pills at him a few years ago when he started having fits, and after seeking counsel with a Board Certified Child Physcologist, it was found that his behavior was not organic in nature. It turned out he was 2 levels ABOVE his grade level in his school curriculum, and was essentially bored to death. Since we changes his course of studies, he has behaved like a normal, energetic kid. Please seek the counsel of a specialist before you allow a medical professional to label him with a serious, and often stigmatized diagnosis, that may NOT be accurate!
Peace, Gizz

Kudos to you for watching out for the side effects. Please continue to moniter your child and keep your Dr updated. Medications may or may not be the answer. Keep an eye on your child. Only you will know if the meds are effective or not.
