I know there are rhymes and such that you can use to make it fun and easy to understand for the child. He wants to do everything all by himself and I can't put this in words or actions that he can comprehend.

Go to your nearest book store. They have FUN exciting books with yarn tread attached to the book. The book is in a shape of a shoe. This will make it fun for him to learn. It's called the "bunny loop" most children learn how to make bunny ears etc...It's all about having fun, once you make it interesting for him he will get!
Good luck :)

If he is the one wanting to learn, get the shoe book. There are a few, but the ones we used had a shoe on one side and flip it over and it was a rocket.
If you are the one who wants him to learn, than you might want to re-think it. As everyone else has said, he may not be ready. Most Kindergarten classes teach you to tie your shoes and then give a certificate to the child.
Does your child have a doll with shoe that tie. Maybe a nuetral party would help! *S*
Good luck and have plenty of patience!

Keep untying your shoe and allow him to try tying it again. Which may result in several knots and hours of annoyance for you but that way he'll learn and be able to do it on his own.

Or chances are he probably can do it and refuses to do it. I used to refuse to tie my shoes for the longest time, mom used to have to buy me the velcro strapped ones so that I'd wear 'em and not have to tie anything.

First tie your own shoe to show him and say, "the bunny goes aroung the tree and through the bunny's nest and you pull it tight." Keep showing him and let him practice a lot! Good luck!

I don't know if a child has the coordination or dexterity to do this at 4.

have him sit next to you and show him again and again on your show laces. Dont touch his, just make sure he's watching you. He'll get it eventually, he just has to think he did it all on his own. Oh, and talk to himlike an adult, no rhymes or songs..

you don't - you stick to velcro straps until he's eight (actually, hand coordination should be good enough by 7 but 8 souned better)
