Is it proper to still give your boss a formal typed letter, or is it acceptable to e-mail a letter of resignation?

Yes, give your boss a formal typed letter.

When you leave a job, you want to leave the best impression possible. Giving a letter by email is too informal, leaving an possible bad impression of you to your (former) boss.

Good luck. ;)

You should only email a letter of resignation if you are a remote employee and in a position where an in person delivery would be impractical or impossible. In any case, it would still be wise and professional to mail a hard copy as well as sending the email version.

Resigning by email is fine. Of course employers would like for you to submit a letter of resignation with notice BUT they will terminate you with no notice.

ABSOLUELY WRONG! You type or print out a letter and be sure to act grateful for the employment they have given you. You may want to ask for an employment recommendation. You send an impersonal e-mail, you will be lucky if they don't boot you out the same day. Be classy and stay classy.

It is not proper to e-mail a resignation. It may lead to bad references in the future.

Always leave a paper trail and always keep a copy for yourself. It covers your *ahem* and besides, it's more professional. (Emails can be tampered with fairly easily and then printed.)

I've been lucky enough that I've been able to give my notice verbally in the past and then followed it up with a written letter.

A formal letter of resignation is still the most honored way to quit. Email is unprofessional and no ethics. The employer will accept your letter in letter format.
