Nits are head lice eggs.
The nit hatches into a baby louse called a nymph. It looks like an adult head louse, but is smaller. Nymphs mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. To live, the nymph must feed on blood. It metamorphoses 3 times before it reaches the adult stage. Most head lice at this stage are almost transparent until they have eaten (sucked blood from a human skin). Then they can be seen more easily since it will be possible to see the tiny amount of red or brown blood in their stomach. With the barenaked eye, it will appear like a small red dot usually about 0.5 mm or less in diameter. With a magnifying glass or microscope it is possible to see their head, legs, and digestive system with the blood that was ingested since they are quite transparent at this stage.
Females lay nits (a few hundreds of eggs); they are usually larger than males. To live, adult lice need to feed on blood.
Please see the webpages for more details and images on Head louse.

Nits are the egg cases of headlice (hatched or otherwise), so they don't eat anything. When the lice hatch they suck blood through the scalp and live off that.

Nits don't eat anything. They are the eggs of head lice (Pediculosis capitis). Head lice live on blood which they extract from biting into the scalp.

Nits don't eat anything, as they are unhatched eggs of hair lice. It's the nasty little lice who feed, boring into your head and feasting on the blood. Hateful little brutes!
