Unlike many foreigners, Americans don't travel that much. Also, for those who do travel, America is a really big country. There are lots of places to visit within the country that you can get to, without needing a passport.

It costs money and takes time, and most Americans don't need it to travel. Within the US we can go to any type of place we want, pretty much. We have mountains, rainforests, deserts, tropical islands, big cities, small towns, farmland, lots and lots of "country" with rivers and woods. Travel within the US is much easier than outside of the US, so most people travel within the US.
For example, hotels are cheaper and better for the money, car rental is easier and cheaper. That's why so many Euro's, especially British, come to the US every year. Think about it - a man who lives in England with 2 kids and a wife, he can go to the Mediterraenean, even someplace like Greece or Turkey, and the accomodations will be costly and he will still probably have to share a bathroom. It will cost him easily $100 (US$) a night.
If he brings the family to Orlando, Florida, he can get a room for between 50 and 100 a night, with its own bathroom and continental breakfast. Not to mention the food in the US is a better value, big portions and low prices, which is the opposite of Europe.
Anyway, that's the biggest reason - it costs time and money to travel too far from the US especially when we have so much here.

Because we mostly go to Mexico and Canada and we don't need a passport to visit there -- only a drivers license. The only people who need passports are those who travel a lot to Asia and Europe.

As an airline employee it's amazing to me how many people show up to travel internationally without a passport, then get upset when they aren't allowed to go!

I've had one and I NEVER used it. I traveled but always to places like Canada and Mexico when you didn't need one like you will now. I even went to Venezula (on a cruise ship) and they didn't stamp my passport. So...why bother?

Our country is so large and has so much to offer that we do not need passports and we don't have to leave our country to see many different cities/ cultures/ or attractions.

They cost a lot of time and effort and if you never plan to travel outside the country, you will never need one.
