I asked a question regarding my sons cough and quite a few people said it sounds like whooping cough, but doesnt the DTAP vaccinate for that? In that case wouldnt it be rare that he has it?

I wasnt worried about it because he is up to date on his shots until people starting saying thats what it sounded like. I just wanted to make sure that that is what the DTAP is. I think its just our every day run of the mill cold with cough.

Yes, the P is for pertussis: whooping cough. But I'd call your doctor and make sure that that's what your baby got.

Babies start receiving the vaccine for whooping cough at 2 months. It should make them immune, but doesn't always as no vaccine is 100% effective. Just like with the chicken pox vaccine. My 2nd son got the vaccine at 1 year old but at 3 contracted a mild case of chicken pox. If you suspect whooping cough, talk to your pediatrician again. It isn't anything to be ignored as it is highly contagious. My daughter contracted whooping cough at 3 weeks and had to stay overnight at the hospital. And guess what? She got it from me. The whooping cough vaccine is only good for 10 years. They are just now starting a booster for 11-12 year olds that will be combined with the tetanus booster as whooping cough is making a big comeback at the moment.

Some of the symptoms of whooping cough are a rapid cough that takes the breath away and when you stop to take a breath you make a "whoop" sound. Also, if your son coughs to where he throws up (without the whoop) that can also be a sign.

Best of luck!

There is always a chance a child could get something that he is vaccinated for. Whooping cough sounds like its name - you really hear the "whoop-whoop-whooop" of the cough. The doctor should be able to diagnose it.

I'd get a second opinion. If it's reaallly barky it could be croupe. When she breathes in does her tummy expand like normal or is se fighting for air? Her chest will concave by her ribs. It could be an ear infection. Those can be very painful for babies especially when they lay down I feel your pain, my baby has been super sick. I took her to the hospital at 3 am because I just knew something was wrong. I almost kicked the nurses *** when he told me it was just a cold and there was nothing they could do. It took the doctor 5 seconds to find out she had an infection in her right ear If it gets worse when she lays down I'd think it's an ear infection

My son was just vaccinated for wooping cough. He is 13 months he got at his 1 year check up. It depends on how old he is. I bet he has a chest cold, but if you are worried take him to the clinic. All children have to be vacinated for that before they can attend most preeschools and mothers morning out

Maybe they're confusing it with "croup". That's a really nasty sounding cough too but there isn't a vaccine for it.

yes they r vaccinated against it.if your son had it then he would have coughing spells so bad that its hard for him to eat, drink and breathe. its almost impossible for him to have it.
