My 3 year old great dane was diagnosed with panosteitis about 4 months ago. He had a major flare up about a month ago and had to have a huge pain and anti inflammatory injection. He was in horrible pain. My question is to those who have dogs with panosteitis. Are all flare ups this intense? Will he have to have a pain injection with every flare up? Thanks for the info.

I have done tons of research on Pano. I'm really wanting to get an idea from other dog parents whose "children" have suffered from pano what I (and my child) might have to deal with in the future.

I have had 5 dogs over the years with it. Some were in mild pain, a few were in BAD pain. the ones in bad pain seemed to have flare ups that were more mild than the one before it. Only one dog went on to have very bad pain with each one, and he recovered just fine.
I only got the injection once. It worked, but only for a while and then it was a concern about more steroids and the fact that the Pano would go away on it's own.
It is a judgement call.

My dogs are giant breed and tend to have symptoms for years...as long as 4-5 years. I had a GSD that had it on and off for 2 years. The giant breeds seem to have it longer since they are still maturing for up to 5 years. Most dogs however, are over it by 2. There should be an end in the future. The only thing I worry about is the development of another condition that can mimic the problem...OCD,hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia.....there are a lot of joint problems with big dogs. If it gets worse or does not seem to be getting better....seek another opinion!!!!!

Yes some are worse then others we put our German Sheppard to sleep because he was in so much pain and the flare up started to become closer and closer until they were almost non stop.
