Yeap! Get to know each other first of course, then ask each other out... And if things are great and are becoming serious, maybe it will be time for you to be committed to one another... Different ways to be bf&gf... You can just ask directly, like you said, or some guys would give the girl their watch, identification bracelet, class ring, etc... Or one of them would suddenly call the other or introduce him or her as their gf/bf... Hope I helped! :)
