Religions were invented becuase people got scared of what they did not and could not understand...like the sun...and rain etc etc. Very Basic stuff that people thousands of years ago had no explanation for. Now that Science is here, why is religion still here?

Because religion still serves a purpose that even science can't fill, now people use it when they need hope or psuedo-love when nobody else provides it for them, it's like an imaginary saftey blanket for people who don't want to believe in scientific facts.

Think of the reason why lonely children will create imaginary friends, and then you know why people still create 'god' even in the light of science.

What is obsolete is your definition of the purpose of religion. Religion today is about pursuing non-physical goals, like spiritual enlightenment or salvation. Only a fanatical minority still maintain that the Bible is a source of scientific knowledge, both the Jews and the Catholics having stated that the creation tale in Genesis should be taken as a metaphor, not as literal fact. Science is about understanding the mechanisms of the universe, which is a totally separate issue. There is not even a conflict, since how can it detract from God's glory that we have a greater understanding of the Glory of Her works? Such conflict that exists is between science and the people who use religion as a tool to achieve wealth and secular power, they are dependent on unquestioning obedience to maintain their position and you do not get that from an educated population. This is why Christian influence world wide is inversely proportional to the educational level of the public, and they are losing so much ground in industrialized nations. It is also why they are trying to undermine the U.S. educational system by establishing religious veto powers on what can be taught. Don't forget that the state of Kansas successfully passed legislation removing evolution from school curriculum's, then discovered that Universities all over the Country were no longer recognizing a Kansas High School diploma a sufficient for admittence, and they finally had to put it back. Rather than Religion, ask why the Churches are still here.

science and religion can co-exist. Christian scientists use scientific knowledge to prove the bible. Some times science can offer contradictions to the bible, but quite often it supports the bible. That we now know that the earth revolves around the sun and that pluto may or may not be a planet still doesn't explain how these object came into existance. Even if science proves that there was a "big Bang", what caused the bang?! Science my discover reasons behind "god's Miracles", but that doesn't disprove who or what made the miracle happen. Besides, religion isn't so much about science as it is about faith and morality. Religion is about becoming a stonger person in your faith. Knowlege of the faith and a closeness with the creator is more important than understanding of how the creator creates.

science has always been around but it has coexisted with religon. The greeks, romans, aztecs, egyptians and e.t.c all had science yet they worshiped a higher power. To say religon was invented only for the ignorant is a false belief. Modern atheists have this short sided view that science is a new concept that should replace religon.
There will always be religon no matter what people try. In history several goverments and societies have tried to eliminate religon but have always failed. the athiest movement will always be small and will always be laughed at.

Read the Book of Job and you will see that the Rain cycle was described in detail over 3000 years before the birth of Perrault and Marriott--modern science says that they invented that.
How come science has to correct itself constantly? How is it that history and archeology confirm thousands of things the Bible said would happen? Science gives man the ability to understand little by little the things that God has put in place.
Religion is the carnal attempt to understand a scientific God.
Boaz.

Religion not only does not explain WHY, it doesn't explain anything. It tells you that the reasons for things are mysterious, known only to god, you can't possibly understand the world or the universe because god is so much grander than you. Religion is at the same time a crutch for the fearful and a tool of the powerful to keep the masses in line and ignorant.

No, there is no need for religion...but until real education catches up to enlighten the ignorant, it won't go away (unfortunately).

Obvious answer..FEAR!! I personally am spiritual.....It would help more if people who are religious fanatics would stop telling people who believe in other religions, gay, or jewish that they will go to hell...I had a few personal experience because of my past..they told me I was evil..well if these are what religion is about, i don't want to be part of it..I believe there is a higher power, but then it can be Aliens from another planet...we read bibles, but have they died and saw god?? have they seen hell?? No, so until we all die, we don't really know..Personally I believe we relieve our life over and over...some will be 'stuck' on this earth for some reason or another...Buddist religion is this way..my family is buddist...Also I don't believe in hell, too many innocent children suffering in 3rd world country..why?? Hell is here...salvation comes when we die and go into a better next life...Peace, Tia

Your premise is in error.

True religion wasn't "invented", it is the outward evidence of an inward awareness of the truth of the living and true God.

There are many false religions that exist simply because man was created with an awareness of the spiritual dimension, but those who haven't been anointed with the Holy Spirit from God have no way of calibrating their spiritual awareness. Unfortunately, these often fall prey to myths and folklore such as evolution and false science worship.

One very prevalent myth is that religion was invented due to some sociological response to the unknown.

May I recommend the myths and folklore board for your further pursuit of this topic?

A lot of young people are growing up and having this same thought. Hopefully over time with just more access to science and reality religion will just fade away.
