My fiancee and I just welcomed a new kitten into our home about two weeks ago. We received him from a repitable pet store in town. His date of birth is 5/27/06. Now my question is pretty plain and simple, but...when ever we shower, run the faucet, leave the toilet open, he almost immediately goes to it and drinks. I make sure his bowl is both full and fresh everyday, does anyone know as to why he does this. Also, we have a fairly soft blanket in the bedroom, that if he comes in contact with it, he immediately drops down, and start "nursing" on it, kneading away as well. I have heard this may mean that he was taken away from his mother too soon, but i figured I'd ask seeings how I had another question. Thanks in advance!!

I had a cat who would only drink from a running tap, the little prima-donna. But you should take the little one in to the vet and talk about some baseline blood work. In case there is an underlying urinary problem. Sometimes if a cat is drinking a lot of water it is because of that.
The pussyfooting could be just an insecurity issue, if the kitten was born in May and you just got him 2 wks ago his weaning age was probably fine. The pet store, if reputable, should have records of his arrival in the store.
Best wishes.

Is he Siamese? They love water but it's not that his water isn't fresh, it's that it doesn't move. He likes the feel of fresh water and may even play with it. They outgrow it.

The kneading is normal it's like a pacifier to a child; he'll outgrow that too but let him knead the blanket because he will bond with it. The better he bonds with his own bed the less often he will wake you up in the middle of the night. Wrap a ticking watch in the blanket and put it in some kind of box, he'll really love having his little sanctuary.

Re Toys - get a laser pointer. Kittens love to run at full speed and you can keep him entertained for hours by having him chase the pointer dot. Also be sure to have lots of interesting toys around - small rubber balls (from gumball machines), hollow golf practice balls, and anything that casts moving light patterns (mini disco ball or suncatchers), kittens need a ton of stimulation or they will start unrolling toilet paper, and digging in the garbage for entertainment. Also rotate the toys every few days so there are always new things to play with. Have fun, kitten hood is over after about 9 months to a year.

As far as the water is concerned he likes fresh water constantly which you can purchase a freshwater feeder from your local pet store and that should keep him out of the toilet or turn the faucet on just barely in the sink when your cat is in there snooping but I would just go for the fresh water er. as far as the blanket is concerned it is not necessarily true that it was removed from mother to early it is just his security. We all had them of some sort

Lots of animals will drink from faucets even though their bowl of water is perfectly fine, either that or he just doesn't like the bowl. I think it's just another/different/more interesting place to find water. Oh, is it next to his litter box? I hear they don't like to eat and drink next to where they poop. I know I don't! As for the nursing, that may be it, or he's just chewing on it, and don't let him eat it, it may not pass! As for the kneading, cats do that their whole lives.

yeah it seems as if he was taken away to early the faucet thing i guess is like drinkin from his mom kinda and the softness of the blanket is to. id get a little kittie bottle and put some water or kittie formula and slowly start winging him off. but i would advise you talk to your vet first. thats a good place to go for any questions about your pets.

I have had cats that LOVE water. Not to be bathed in, of course! My cat would jump in the shower with me, stand on the toilet while I was brushing my teeth (and even let me brush his with another tooth brush!). He just liked to be around me, no matter what I was doing. I also have seen one of my cats lick the water off the pavement when it dripped out of the hose, and they always have water available. Curiosity didn't kill any cats, but they are really a curiosity to ME!!

Maybe he was weaned too young. Kittens and puppies do best when weaned at 8 weeks, not 6. But, it's okay to let him "nurse" on his blankey!

you should probably call your vet and ask if you could give him a little bottle full of water
