Although he still has alot of energy, there are times when he seems to tire easily. I would like to know what to watch for as he ages.

I grew up with dachsies, keep long-hairs to this day. Usually between the ages of 4-7 they start manifesting early signs of arthritis in their backs, especially if they've been a typical, "I do as I please which means jumping on the couch" dachshunds. This can appear as tiredness, reluctance to exercise or play as much, etc. Be sure that your veterinarian does a thorough exam of your dog's back every year (you also want to rule out IVD, a dachsie spinal disease that requires very expensive surgery), and you may want to get him started on glucosamine/chondriton supplements. You'll also want to ensure that he doesn't become overweight, as this intensifies any back issues/arthritis he may have. I use ramps in the house and carry mine up and down the stairs to further help with the problem.

Other than that dachsies are pretty sturdy little dogs. The Dog Bible says that dachshunds and toy poodles are the longest-lived dogs. Most of ours lived past 15 years!

my grampa has a long haired dash hound and my aunt has a long haired mine and my grampa's dog is like 7 or 8 and she still has alot of energy but she takes naps kinda like a cat know and my aunts is like 3 years old and is as hyper as ever but seeing as since i grew up with my grampas dog i would tell u that that dont feed them tabla scrapes u will soon find out that the dog will be very very heavy and that may cause it to loose energy (this is what happend to my grampa's dog ) but i would say that they will still have alot of energy by the time the got to be 7 or 8 years old and then the dogs energy will decrease some and it will take more naps and lay around more

Dascahunds can live to be ripe old ages I have a friend who breeds them. Your daschund may have Diabetics and need insuline. Check with your vet. My friend had one that lived to be 16 and took a championship in Veterans class and was still spunky as ever untill the day she died.
