Background: Creationists - specifically young Earth creationists, contend that God made the Earth recently, that Dinosaur walked with man, they point to the thickness of moondust and thermodyamics, all really bad science.
So hypothetically, if all the energy they spent with that junk science they spent on "actual science", forget the God no God thing everyone is sick of it and I believe they are free to believe what they want, I support their freedom to do so absolutely, but what if they harnassed that energy on real issues, like modern medical cures, or feeding hunger, or eliminating genocide and war?
How far would the human race go if the Creationists stopped their "spiritual warfare" and joined us for real progress?
Would they even be an outstanding addition? Even if it was the guy in the corner saying "what if that goes wrong" it would be a step up from "our dogma says blah blah blah".
Just wondering what you think.
I think they might help if they joined us.

Are you sure they could wrap their heads around legitimate science? I mean, sure, it'd be great... but only if they REALLY get it and don't bog everything down with confusion.

The problem with Creationists is that they want us to believe on exactly WHICH METHOD God used to create the universe and the living creatures.
What if God has chosen precisely EVOLUTION?
Our problem is that we are subject to TIME and God is not.
That is why we cannot understand that being God eternal also the creation must be an eternal process.
Do not confuse religion and spirituality with their fairy tales!
Please consider the general culture and scientific knowledge when the most religious books were written. They had to be written in a language that could be understood by the people at that time.

A lot farther a lot faster than we can currently go now. There is so much that needs to be done, and unfortunately in this country science is a dwindling field. If all efforts were put to the greater good of eradicating disease, fighting hunger by engineering better crops and finding ways to eliminating war the world would be a much better place.

Us? who is us? As an agnostic by definition I question the origin of man and our place in the universe. What Junk Science are you referring to, the holes punched in theory's by creationists or the dogmatic teaching of science theory as fact? As far as harnessing that energy to do some good does that apply to Scientists as well? Does that mean fields such as Paleontology and Astronomy should be abandoned because they produce no concrete progress? Instead of condemning those that choose to pursue a path of a better understanding of man and what it means to be human as a waste of time. Why don't you rally us to spend less time on pointless discussions on yahoo and do some volunteer work instead.

I can agree with that. But how do you convince a person that believes in a man in the sky that science is precedent over said man?
I believe that the only way to bring these Christians around is to dismantle the church. All churches should be independent of one another, with no business ties to the next. No organization. No Pope. Freedom of religion, basically. A choice.

I think that it would really help a lot if they joined us. I'm to the point where I really don't care whether a person believes in a 'god' or not, I just wish that they would join the productive society. The more people we have working on advancement in society, the more opportunity there is for improvement.

I would like to ask you how much scientific research currently gets approved which has christian objectives ie: to prove creationism. And how many Christian scientists currently hold creationism over evolution and stop participating in current research because of it, but can still call themselves researchers.
Personally with that in mind I would expect very little difference.

That is part of the motivation we in YA have in trying to get them to take a closer look at what their religions really are. I agree, many of them could make a good contribution to society in that way if they applied their zeal to something other than fairy-tales.

A lovely idea hon. It'll never happen. =) Besides, in some cases (like stem cell research), the are actively trying to BLOCK progress. I'm not saying I'm in favor of stem cell research, or that I'm not....just pointing out that they will still let their dogma get in the way of actual progress, limiting us to only progress that is "ok" with their outdated ideas.

The difference it they use science to get to a predetermined answer. If there was already a theory for curing cancer, they could prove it, but without god what direction do they have? Besides, all you have to do is pray, and if god wills it, they shall be saved.

there are vast numbers of reasonable and intelligent people in the world.
Let the creationists continue their funny games as long as they don't prevent true scientific education of the young, these creationists are closer to dinosaurs than they think.
