Close tie between the British and the Israelis. The recent debacle in Lebanon was more a question of inadequate supplies and support for mobilized reservists than the quality of the fighting man.

Smaller militaries are easier to maintain and train to standard. Hence, the two listed above. American advantages are in firepower, logistics, and technology. The American military is simply too large and its enlistment terms are too short to maintain a skilled majority of seasoned professionals over a long duration in every single unit. For every active duty unit that is trained to standard, you get several Reserve and National Guard units that are in various stages of neglect. This has changed greatly in recent years, but the overall qualitative advantage remains firmly in the hands of the British and the Israelis.

As for Canadians, I met a good number over in JRTC. Two companies worth, in fact. I most certainly was NOT impressed, but these weren't good troops like the Princess Pats. Apparently that "shoestring budget" and emphasis on creating "thinking soldiers" doesn't extend to everyone in the Canadian Armed Forces, but they do have good troops. Their force just isn't as battle-hardened as the IDF or the British.

It was believed that Israel had the strongest & best trained but
after the last scrimmage, some are rethinking that. I have always believed it was the United States, all volunteer & full of heart. We train well & have purpose. China trains hard but has never been tested & have been drafted into army. You never know how a draftee is going to perform.

Seals are not an army but a special ops part of a division of an army like my son's Army Rangers.

Even though I have no love for them (Being Irish) I would have to admit that the British army is probably the best trained army in the world...it has been for centuries without doubt.

I would based my answer in the context of "Which army is the most experienced in the world?"

A few came to mind, namely:
- the United States Army;
- the Israeli Defence Force (IDF);
- the British Army;

This is not to discredit armies from other nationalities, since each was established originally for different needs and terrain requirement.

Britain and some of the other nations of the commonwealth (like Australia and New Zealand).

To anybody who says America, yes they are the best and most powerful, but on an individual basis they are not nearly as well trained as other western militaries.

I saw a documentary which had a 'friendly' competition between a team of crack US Marines and a team of French Foreign Legionnaires as to who would get through an incredibly tough jungle assault course the quickest. The Marines did it in a very creditable 10 hours. The Legionnaires did it in, er, 40 minutes.....

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Canadian Forces.

With something resembling a shoestring budget for equipment and recruiting, we deliver the same results that a US force over 10 times our numbers cannot deliver in Afghanistan.

From day 1 of Basic Training, leadership training is being drummed into our skulls, until when we come out of recruit school, you don't have mindless automatons, but soldiers who have already been taught to think as opposed to just blindly follow orders, or require spelled-out instructions for any minor task.

Also, we are versatile and multidisciplined. An infanteer can also be qualified to drive a LAV III armoured vehicle, as well as operate its weapons, as well as having gone through sniper school at some point. Our combat engineers know everything in that field from trench-digging to EOD.

Granted, we don't have the nicest toys out there, but we have good people with good heads on their shoulders who know how to make the very best of any piece of gear we have, and then some.

The British Army. The best at what they do for nearly 300 years.

Quite simply, the British. The Regimental system has kept us at the top for hundreds of years, and men like Wellington, Montgomery etc.

As patriotic as I am, I'd love to say the US. However, training wise, I hear like the UK or something, train ALL their soldiers like special forces, instead of having a unit like the US. However again, we are the best as far as I'm concerned because, technically, we're undefeated!!! I know my info is not the most accurate, but, you asked and I answered.
