It is a common misconception that the poor are getting poorer. In the US, the poor are so much better off than they were 50 years ago. They have protections, running water, access to food and health care. They are not making much money, but that is not the only measure of poverty.

Actually, the poverty line was created as the amount of money earned required to feed a family. This concept doesn't apply very well anymore given the assistance available. It only helps determine who is available for assistance.

In addition, poverty is a relative term. What would it take to be rich? A poor person in America is VERY rich when you compare them to a person in many countries across the globe.

None of this is to minimize the hardships faced by impovrished people. It's just that we don't have a good measure of it and as long as it's a relative value, we will never put an end to it. The communists tried.

And think about what would happen if we made the minimum wage, say $10/hour. Great. The prices of everything goes up. The $10/hr worker is still the poorest worker and can afford the enevitable price hikes the least.

Finally, the gap between rich and poor will always get bigger. You can only be so poor, but you can be infinitely rich unless we place restriction on wealth and ask each of us to give back to the community to share equally.

Oh wait, that's Communism.

So anyway. It's a problem. But lets keep in mind how much better today people have it. We continue to make gains.

The complete expression is that "the rich get rich and the poor get children." That failure to keep from breeding more kids than they can support is why the poor get poorer. The self-restraint to limit themselves to a reasonable number of kids is why the rich don't get poorer. It works with people and it works with nations, as the smarter third world countries are just starting to realize.

It has always been like that. There will always be differences.
At least today you don't have to be a noble to be rich, you can just be smart or lucky.
But it is true that there is a threshold above which money helps making more money.
I agree that we should anyway help the poor people to reach at least a level where all the basic needs are satisfied.

Rich people know how to make money grow. Poor people know how to waste money and generally don't give a flip about digging themselves out of the financial hole. Its much easier to blame a rich person for making you poor than it is to get off your lazy **** and get your own money.
