All you can do is tell him exactly that - you love him, but you can't stay with him while he's ruining his life. Tell him that, if he decides to clean up his act, you'll consider taking him back - assuming you haven't found someone else by then, of course.
Perhaps the thought of you being with a mature, responsible adult will make him realize that you can and will do better without him holding you down.
Other than that, there's nothing you can do for him. He has to want to stop, and losing you probably isn't going to be enough. Do yourself a favor and move on. If he comes back some day all cleaned up, and you're available, give him a chance, but do not wait for him to change. As long as he knows you're there, waiting to pick up the pieces, he will remain a needy child.

he has to quit for himself and by you telling him that he has to quit it's not going to work. The best thing you can do is break up with him and let him find a reason to quit.

tell him exactly that. Stay out of your life until you are cleaned up. You need to practice tough love and stand by what you say...

If he changes so that you will take him back his changes will mean NOTHING. He has to change for himself, whether he ever sees you again or not.
