I think faith in yourself is the best thing to try on. Nonetheless the old coat may not be totally ratty - there may be a few shiny buttons that are worth keeping. What I find worse is all the new coats that people keep trying to put on me!

It would be more like shedding a snake skin and not a a ratty old coat. Actually, it would be more like getting a really short hair cut. No... it would be more like taking a bath in cottage cheese while sucking on a Tootsie Roll Pop.
So, in summary, shedding one's faith is like bathing in curdled milk while eating a lollipop and has absolutely nothing to do with old clothes.

The one thing that I find fascinating and hopeful about the human race is its capacity to enact fundamental change. Sometimes that change is positive to the individual and the group. At other times the result is unexpected and a horror story to all. But I can't help but be the classic hopeful and optimistic Pollyanna when I know at the very core of my being that we humans can change.
Let's hope that we can change our attitude towards others of different religions and cultures before it's too late.

Yes. Many people toss out their faith like so much dirty bath water. I did it myself without looking back. I lived a life of sin for 20 years or so. Then I met some Buddhists. They taught me to pray. They encouraged me back to the prayers of my childhood. Low and behold, God sent a saint to call me home. I came back to church a total Jesus Freak!
I got lucky. Some folks don't get a second chance.

Yes we can, and the "ratty old coat" analogy is a fair one. A "ratty old security blanket" would even be better. It is something we've outgrown. We may smile upon encountering it in some old box (or discussion). Ah .. those days were something ... invisible friends, tooth fairies, Santa .... they seemed so real!

If your faith is in other than The Faith then you should shed it... The True Christians Faith will never need to be replaced... Once The Truth is known there is no concern for any other "faith"

I don't think so because true faith is in the heart. People that change probably just went through the steps but never had it.
It's a truly amazing thing, it'll never leave no matter what.
Once you truly let God in your heart he becomes you, you become him.

Quite possible. Faith as many religious people will tell you is not just a straight road, but will have ups and downs. If you are looking for it, you will find it, eventually!

not really. If its been implanted during the early formative years of your life. You will find yourself falling back to it in dire situations or in old age.
This is barring some major life changing event.
