A (not THE) Mormon Mission is when a young man of at least 19 years of age (or a woman of at least 21 years of age) is sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to a part of the world to teach the gospel and serve the people of that area. In some cases, the missionary may have to learn a new language.
For the men, the time frame is 24 months, for the women it is 18 months. I served a mission in the Dominican Republic (my wife served one at the same time in British Columbia.)
I’m not quite sure what the Puritan Mission is to which you refer, but you can draw your conclusions by what I have told you about a Mormon mission.

Are you referring to why the Mormon church was established? If so, it is a restoration, to the earth, of the original gospel of Jesus Christ. It was not a reformation of current beliefs or anything else. It was the establishment of the Kingdom of God in the last days to include the restoration of the priesthood, temples, church orginazation, ordinances, and gospel truth.
If you have any specific questions about the LDS church, I would be more than happy to answer them.
