The "pop" is air in your joints escaping. Does not hurt anything and you can't stop it. If it really bothers you see a Doc. Good luck!

These are good answers, but one person was wrong, it is bad for you. As you "pop" the joint, you are releasing gases and stretching the ligaments, but as your are stretching the ligaments you are decreaseing the stability of the joint. The body's natural defense against instability is to make it stable some how, and it does this by adding more bone around the joint, which causes more pain and less ability to move fully. This happens mostly in the spine, but it can happen in any joint. I strongly suggest seeing a chiropractor to help regain proper motion to the joint before the joints degenerate (arthritis). If you don't currently see a chiropractor and are interested, go to www.sorsi.com to find one in your area, if you are in the St. Paul, Minnesota area, email me or go to my website at www.healinghandschiro.com.

Escaping gases: Scientists explain that synovial fluid present in your joints acts as a lubricant. The fluid contains the gases oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When you pop or crack a joint, you stretch the joint capsule. Gas is rapidly released, which forms bubbles. In order to crack the same joint again, you have to wait until the gases return to the synovial fluid.

Air bubbles in the sinovial fluid are what causes the popping noise.

Carbon dioxide gas collects in joints, and when you "crack" it, the gas escapes.
