It would be nice to see the republican supporters of the war have sons/daughters get drafted. They might be a little quicker to end it, if that were the case.

Draft is not really necessary except in times where VAST amounts of manpower is needed, as it was in wars past. Today we are an all volunteer military, and it does well.
HOWEVER... I do thing that there should be no free handouts from the government in this world.... If you recieve public assistance, it might as well be because you are serving your country in the Armed Forces. To qualify for public assistance you should not only have to meet the current requirements, but also meet the requirements for military service so that you can join and serve, earning your way and gaining training.

In the 60s I was a hippy and hated the draft. Since, however, I have changed my mind. In our current volunteer army, mostly poor and lower middle class people join. They join as an earlier answerer said to get their education paid for. This applies more to middle class people than poor, because poor peoples kids get their education funded as it is. It is easy to support a war when your kid does not have to go. It would become much less popular if everybodies kid might go due to totally random selection. Yes bring the draft back and keep it so we have to think about whether the war is really worth fighting.

Yes. I was drafted and I got a lot of good exposure.
First thing those punks would have to get rid of their piercings.
Second, I saw a lot of useless punks become people.
Draft would make sure we got a better representative of the population.
I don't think anyone should be exempt. The teachers and leaders we have now are all draft dodgers. People who either got college deferments or went to canada.

I hate the fact that we have to fight in this War, but i agree that the draft should be reinstated, i think that it should be mandatory for everyone to serve at least 4 years in a military branch of thier choice. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!!!

I don't know. I bet Bush's political points would go down if he
re-installed the draft for an unwinnable war that has nothing to do with 9/11.

why are only democrats pushing for a draft? why did Gore try to get the military vote thrown out in the 2000 elections? (the loophole he used was the aircraft carrier they served on had a post office that didnt stamp the date/time on the envelopes of the absentee ballots).

True! I just hope we don't ever get to that point, however I have a feeling we will be, sooner than later.
They have already re-activated 14,000 IRR from the Army, once they run out, then watch out......
Then you will really see dramatic changes in regards to supporting the war in Iraq...... once we have young men forced to leave their families and fight for this administrations greed, and die over there......... people will change their minds, real quick

Absolutely NOT. Putting people in the military who don't want to be there would severely damage the quality of our military.

NO WAY! The draft doesn't decriminate between parties, its bad enough they are sending our enlisted sons and daughters to die for financial gain, God forbid they force those who are opposed to go. I'd pack up my kids and move to Canada before I'd let that happen!
