The absolute key with cooking brown rice is pre soaking, to soften the grain and give it more of a white rice texture. This will also make the rice more easily digested, as well as shorten the cooking time. For each cup of brown rice, soak (in cooking pan or rice cooker) w/ 2 1/4cup of water, and 2 Tablespoons lemon juice, yogurt or other acid (improves the release of nutrients), combine and let stand overnight, or at least 7 hours. After soaking, add 1/2- 1 teaspoon salt, to taste, and turn on rice cooker. (If you don't have a rice cooker, just proceed cooking as directed on the rice package, noting that the cooking time will probably be shorter).
For those days that you didn't have time to soak the rice ahead of time, the egg as others have suggested will help produce some pretty good rice, here's a great recipe for baked brown rice using egg that turns out a nicely textured rice : http://www.recipezaar.com/56242
This is the recipe that I used before finding out about pre-soaking, and my family enjoyed is just as well.
Also substituting any broth for water in either of these recipes will make the rice extra special.
Either of these suggestions will help you to het away from that crunchy, soggy, chewy, "death" tasting rice that you have come to believe is "just how brown rice is supposed to taste"

Not only will chicken broth help, but you may want to try cooking it in the oven to avoid the charred bottom brown rice can have since it takes 3 times longer to cook than white rice. Brown rice is so much better for you than white!

1 4 oz can of mushrooms drained
1 cup of brown rice (any other plain rice is good, too or a mix)
i can of Campbell's Consomme soup (sometimes hard to find)
1 can of Campbell's French Onion soup
1 stick of butter
Mix in a casserole dish and bake for at least an hour till the liquid is absorbed at about 375 degree. Real greasy but I use a slotted spoon to serve it. It is good with any kind of meat and good to take to a potluck, etc.

Toward the end of the cooking of the rice crack open an egg and add to the rice also you can season it with some garlic salt and butter or olive oil if your are really adventurous.I am sure that it will taste better(melting some cheese could also help)

Instead of using plain water to cook, use a chicken or vegetable broth.
Use olive oil instead of butter. Butter and brown rice is weird and makes it go rancid easier.

add soup stock / flavours to cooking water.
Its what you cook and serve it with that makes the deal.
You can also stir some butter into the rice before serving.
Nice stir fried with chopped onions and eggs with parmesan cheese.
Brown rice is also nice served as a sweet, stir fry with grated hazelnut, honey and dried fruits.
