No, there is no evidence to support that, however it is possible that it can cause other hand problems in later life.

There are two kinds of Arthritis, Rheumatoid and Osteo.
The first is a genetic condition you either have or don't, you know when you see poor old ladies with badly deformed fingers? That's Rheumatoid. Osteo Arthritis is caused by significant wear and tear on joints between bones and in extreme cases those joints may need to be surgical replaced, which means painful surgery and plastic joints which last from 10-25 years max (so not a good option unless you HAVE to). Technically, habitually knuckle crackers could give themselves osteo arthritis, a risk not worth running if you value being able to wipe your own bottom!

Cracking your knuckles doesn't give you arthritis,It is an old wives tale. There are two types of arthritis - Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The factors behind Osteoarthritis is age, gender, weight and injuries. With Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body's defence mechanisms go into action when there's no threat, starts attacking the joints and sometimes other parts of the body, causing inflammation of the joints.

The brainiac is correct, it does make bubbles pop but it could
be straight oxygen. Once it becomes a habit your hand will
stiffen, so you crack your knuckles to loosen up. It is a bad
habit, and time will make it all the worse. So, better stop now.

Medical studies have shown that the popping of gas in your knuckles isn't what causes the arthritis, but it's the over-stretching of the ligaments that can cause it. So technically no, popping the gas won't, but over stretching the knuckle to create the pop will.

nop ture about arthritis. but if you do that frequently, you can empty the synovial fluid which prevent friction between bones, and then you can tear the layer of cartilage, which is ismilar to arthritis, but it is not like arthritis. arhtritis is done alone, and this is done because you do this, you crack your knuckles. don't do it often, after all you are doing it for nothing, you are not gaining advantage but risking that you make the bone thinner at the top. it hurts a lot.

No, it does not give you arthritis. You're right. It is the CO2 bubbles popping, so there's diddly squat to worry about!

But you are still causing unnecessary friction in your joints which I imagine will only exacerbate any underlying arthritis.

I have asked two chiropractors this question, and they both said that cracking your knuckles will not cause arthritis, but cracking your neck will lead to degeneration of the upper spine. I thought that was interesting enough to share.

Been doing it for 46 years and no arthritis yet. My biology teacher at school told us it was just gas bubbles bursting.
