As a satanist im a bit baised, but i took along time to make my choice. There is no "evil" in satanism, there is looking out for number 1 which can cause harm to others, but if they deserve it then they get it. To the christains who just said because its satan are stupid as most satanists do NOT worship satan as a being (i do), they use satan to symblise the power within. some satanists are evil but that is because of the way they naturally are evil people, but then i know cristains who are the same. if i where you i would read the satanic bible, its a good place to start, and there are lots of internet sites out there, some of which are already listed
have just read an answer by a christain, on behalf of "gramps" will you lot please do some reasurch before you answer this question, answers based entirly on the bible wont help with his choice

From what I understood from Anton Zandor LaVey (I think that's how you spell it) Satanism is based on doing everything that Christianity claims to be "bad." To be a true Satanist, you must put yourself first and give what you get rather that just giving and seeing what you get as a bonus. Satanism teaches that it is okay to be selfish sometimes. Looking after number one isn't selfish, it's both natural and necessary.
Like all religions, not every single member will agree on everything to do with it. As a general rule, most Satanists are very Atheistic in their views. Satan doesn't really exist, he is just a metaphor for rebellion.
I skim read the book quite some time ago so I don't remember everything about it. I think it is a very misunderstood religion and to a certain extent, quite profound.

OK, since nobody else seems to have a view, I will put my oar in! I am assuming that Satanism can be regarded as a religion. i am personally an atheist. Is satanism evil? Well, it wasn't satanists who undertook the crusades, destroyed the world trade centre or held the Spanish Inquisition. So on the basis of the evidence, I would say that most major religions are much more evil than satanism. In fact, I can't think of any negative action that has been claimed by, or attributeed to satanists. If you believe that actions speak louder than words, then you'd probably rather have satanists running your country than Catholics, Moslems or any other religious group. Just my view.

It is the simple opposite of christianity.
Or what Anton Levay saw as the opposite to christianity.
Most of it deals with the hypocracy in the christian religion.
if you were to look up the nine Satanic statements, and the 11 satanic laws for the earth, you would likely agree with most of what is said. many times people have posted a satanic statement or law and asked for people's opinions, and recieved very good comments about it. most of the people commenting never knew where the statement came from.
so NO i do not think it is evil. I think that it may be a bit selfish in it's form of spirituality, but that is something to be decided by the satanist. not the religion.

There is one than one type of satanism to begin with. I'll start with the one most popular in the mind's eye or one inspired from what they have heard. This is the type that involves reversed pentagrams, wearing black and heavy metal music, orgies and basically a reverse mockery of christianity. This is typically an anarchistic response to the church or a means from which people can attribute anti-social behaviour to a higher power. It believes the devil is evil and worship evil because they dislike things about the church. Typically they either do not deep down beleives themselves evil and use it as an outlet or they see it as a means to justify their behaviour which they adopted independently of taking up this "cult" They rarely stage comprehensive debate or a viewpoint that can be argued or seen to be a unified religion.
The other branch however is a lot more benign and organised but receives far less coverage. It is basically a divurgence Judo-Christian doctrine by asserting several key observations. these include:
1. God is not all good or once was but no longer is
2. Adam and Eve's fall from Eden was either spiteful punishment from an orchestrating God or salvation from blindness and ignorance by a benevolent Lucifer
3. Lucifer is an angel, he embodies the desire for beings to rise to the state of goodness and power of God, and that this desire is permissable in humans, which God fears that his children will one day no longer need him.
Satanists in this strain are therefore not necessarily evil in their actions or practices, indeed if they wish to aspire to the level of God they should cultivate in themselves things such as goodness, compassion, knowledge etc. They see the suffering of the world and treat this as a sign that God has failed in his abilities, to be all powerful and good prohibit allowing this world to continue in this state and so they see Lucifer's gift of the fruit of knowledge and his desire to ascend to God's level as a message. If God cast down a being that tried to ascend to his level, doesn't that mean it's possible? If the attempt is futile why such a punishment and the church's smear campaign for the action? And whilst Lucifer was a angel he was not made in God's image as was man, hence man's chances are much greater for success. Satanists believehat mankind was created initially as a sort of mockery or inside joke, a creature capable of the greatness of God, to become all the things he was yet not given the knowledge to do so, and it was Lucifer's sacrifice to give this and all other knowledge to mankind. This explains their dislike of the church for their repeated putdowns through history of knowledgeable pursuits, self advancement and the challenging to their ideas.
Hope this has helped answer your question or given you some more wordly information. I remain an Atheist but have found this topic rather fascinating as I happened upon it some years ago.

Some unbalanced people may say Satanism is wrong and evil, I guess in many respects it is, but we need the dark side to keep things in balance.
I believe that it would be wrong to worship a God that is unbalanced (only a good side), God is also Satan - other side of the same coin...
I do not worship God/Satan, although I believe that a creator exists

Seems to have a strong idealism... most of the one's I have come in contact with uphold a Humanistic idea, much like the Atheists here do. To live this life, do what we can here and now and quit daydreaming about what life may or may not come to us after we leave this one. I do not think it is evil, though I'm sure there are people who twist it just to put fanatic Christians on edge... and it works. And, of course, we always have the teenagers who are rebeling against the authority of their parents who use the hollywood version of Satanism in an attempt to claim their personal individualism. Later, those people will kick themselves in the the as.s

As a Pagan I don't believe in Satan, Satanists subscribe to the Christian cosmology and world view differing only as to their choice of deity. When I was in Navy boot camp we had a practicing Satanist who tried to have that listed as his religion and the navy listed him as "Protestant". It was kind of funny, my Catholic relatives had always told me that about the Protestants. Aside from Anton LaVey's "First Church of Satan" back in the 70s there has never been any coherent attempt to codify what does and does not constitute Satanic beliefs, the Christians just lump everything they don't like together and that's what they call it. That being the case, I basically view it as a meaningless.
To J-boy:
Hadn't heard that one, thanks for the info, I'll have to look into it.

I think that is an eclectic mix of pure evil at one end of the scale and pure stupidity at the other!! It does'nt appeal to me and conjurs up an image of 'Scruffy' goths* triumphantly stroking grimoires and twisted sad, oddballs that would be shunned elsewhere in society dressed in ceremonial robes (* I know most goths are clean - I used to be a metaller when I was a kiddie!)
I think that Satan is the epitome of pure evil and that blood sacrifice and revenge are not the ingredients of a well adjusted religion!!

Hello!!! Satanism is all about satan, the hater of your soul, the fallen angel, the enemy of everything that is good and acceptable in the eyes of God. If you want to know more read the Bible.
