Get an old piece of glass and try to score it with your stone, if it does, it's a diamond.

Easy. Scratch it against a piece of glass. Diamonds will cut glass. Glass won't affect another piece of glass.

Try scratching a piece of toughen glass with the suspect stone, if it cuts the glass easilly its more than likely a diamond or cubic zircon, if its glass it wont cut into the glass

Drop it in water. Glass will disappear. Diamond won't.
You can't use that method to tell diamond from moissanite or cubic zirconium, though.

The quality of the ring it is mounted in is often a clue otherwise buy a diamond tester......you touch the stone and it beeps if it is a diamond.
