Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy Recipe
2 packages garlic-ranch salad dressing mix
1 cup all-purpose flour
Ground black pepper
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cups buttermilk, plus 1 cup
1 pound cubed steak, cut into 4 pieces
Oil, for frying
1 cup chicken broth
1 (2.64-ounce) package gravy mix
Mashed potatoes, for serving

Combine 1 package salad dressing mix, flour, and pepper, to taste, in a large plastic bag. Set aside. Combine another package salad dressing mix, egg, and 2 cups buttermilk in a shallow bowl. Soak steaks in buttermilk mixture. Remove 1 steak and toss in flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour and dip again in the buttermilk mixture. Return to flour mixture and toss. Repeat process for remaining steaks.
Heat 1/2-inch layer of oil in a large cast iron skillet to 350 degrees F. Place 2 steaks in the pan at a time. Cook for 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

To make the gravy, combine 1 cup buttermilk, chicken broth, and gravy package in small saucepan. Bring to simmer over medium heat and stir well. Top steaks with gravy and serve with mashed potatoes and gravy, if desired.

Put a tablespoon or two of oil in your skillet for each two cube steaks you cook. Heat to medium high. Meanwhile, season your steaks with s and p, and coat liberally with flour, covering the whole thing. Shake off excess, and fry in heated pan just until golden brown on both sides.

Slice a large onion and large green bell pepper into rings. Add to the steak in the pan along with two 15 ounce cans of stewed tomatoes. Cook over a VERY low (barely simmering) flame for a few hours, or until the cube steak falls apart when you try to pick it up with a fork.

Season tomato gravy with salt and pepper, thicken with a little corn starch mixed with water, and serve over rice or mashed potatoes.

My grandmothers recipe is very good...

Take your cube steak and dip in egg and flour then fry it. When it is done frying take it out of the skillet and clean the skillet up. Place the cube steak back in the skillet and put brown gravy all over it (I use 3 of the powder packets mixed with water for 4 steaks) and put onions on top. Turn the fire down and let it simmer covered for approx 2-3 hours depending on how tender you want it. Keep checking it though so it won't burn on the bottom. I keep turning mine. When it is done you can cut it with a fork and it melts in your mouth.

Cook Time: 25 Minutes Ready In: 40 Minutes
Yields: 4 servings
"An easy to make classic featuring tasty hamburger 'steaks' smothered in gravy and onions. Traditionally served with hot white rice or potatoes, it's a great way to dress up a pound of ground beef and you probably have all the ingredients on hand!"
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound ground beef
1 egg
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup thinly sliced onion
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon cooking sherry
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 8 balls, and flatten into patties.
2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties and onion in the oil until patties are nicely browned, about 4 minutes per side. Remove the beef patties to a plate, and keep warm.
3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in flour with a fork, scraping bits of beef off of the bottom as you stir. Gradually mix in the beef broth and sherry. Season with seasoned salt. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until the gravy thickens. Turn heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer for another 15 minutes.
