For instance, thou shall not kill. Would it have killed them to add some details to better explain what was meant by that? No pun intended.

Thou shall not kill (Avoid Killing of ourself and others, including animals and all sentient beings).

Like another person already said, much more is described in detail in the rest of the mosaic books. For instance, in EXodus 22:2 it says that if a thief is killed during a break- in, then the homeowner is innocent. however verse 3 says that if it is during the daylight hours, then the owner would be bloodguilty of manslaughter. the Ten commandments r basically common sense that the Israelites would understand, short and too the point. there might be exceptions in extreme cases, but to not kill one's neighbor is a common goal of a civilized society.

Which is ironic b/c soon after that, the Isrealites impaled someone holding the hand of a foreign woman. And god was so thrilled he belayed punishment for a previous offense. So is killing OK or not?

ACTUALLY THERE ARE MORE DETAILS IN THE OLD TESTIMENT FOLLOWING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. MOSES LOOK IN EXODUS, LEVITICUS, DEUTERONEMY......
