I think the solution lies in HEAVY financial penalties for ANY reported dog bite...Like, withholding DL until large fine is paid..The same for dog fighting for sport..If we can stamp out this barbaric 'sport', then we are on the track to breeding less aggressive dogs..The penalties for dog fighting, has to be larger than the financial rewards..
Hitting dog owners in the pocket book, is the best way to nurture responsible dog ownership..
The penalties in both cases have to be large enough that it benefits the government..beyond court costs, for there to ever be efficient inforcement...

No, they should not be banned, regulated yes. There are so many RESPONSIBLE pit owners in this world. But, I don't think any random idiot should be able to own one.
Many people get these dogs because they're 'cool', or get them as a status symbol, and are in over their heads, they don't properly train the dogs, or train them to be aggressive... this is when you see all the negative stories about pit bulls.
I am a nurse and I have been lucky enough to meet 2 pits over the years that were THERAPY animals, they worked with the elderly and children. When I look at a pit, I see a wonderful dog, not a killer.
Many agencies have pit bulls who are search and rescue dogs....rottweilers as well.
Most people who want to ban pits have had no contact with pits other than the negative stories they see on the news.
Punish the deed, NOT the breed.

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.
Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

Pit bulls is the designation used for about mulitple breeds of dogs. There is the American Staffordshire Terrior, the Stafordshire bull terrier, the bull terrior and others I think. These dogs are by nature very nice loving dogs. They have gotten a bad rap because gangbangers and other idiots get them, train them to attack and don't train them to be under control. There is nothing by nature wrong with these breeds. Banning dogs by breed is unfair. The AKC is totally against the practice. Vicious dogs should be put down, regardless of breed. I am much more afraid of a doberman pincer than a pit bull.

Absolutely not. There are many sweet Pit Bulls who would never think of hurting any one (regardless of species). There are also plenty of Labs, Cocker Spaniels, Chihuahuas, and mixes who would bite you as soon as look at you. Eradicating a breed because of the reckless actions of some people is barbaric. Besides, if Pit Bulls are gone the people who have them for unsavory reasons will just ruin another breed. The people who have aggressive dogs (whatever the breed) should be dealt with harshly, not the dogs themselves.

These laws right now, are state by state. Wolf Hybrids are illegal in many states. Pit bulls are not illegal per se.
however, I used to volunteer in a dog shelter in Detroit and pit bulls were NEVER adopted out, they were always put down. A majority of the ones that had been surrendered or taken in were victims of fight rings, and often couldn't heal from their injuries. The rest were not adopted out for fear that they would end up in a fighting ring and suffer the same abuses as the others.

No breed of dog should ever be banned....that is disgusting. It's the people not the dogs. A dog properly trained can be a good dog. It does not matter what the breed is. I have a Sherpei...known for being viscious....she was abused on top of that...I got her at two....with love and guidance she came around. She is now loving to me...not to strangers....but it took 5 years to get where she is now. Most would have gave up on her. I refused. I know loving pitbulls...but they are also loving owners. I think owning a dog is a HUGE responsibility...it is like bringing a newborn home. Owners just need to be better pet owners...and the laws against the ones that arent' need to be more strict.

no the us should NOT do the same. i have a 4 yr old pit who is the biggest baby. hes afraid of the cat. he was raised to be very social from when he was a puppy(with people and other dogs). hes great with kids my neighbor has 2 pits as family pets and 2 children.its just a domino effect people see something on the news and then they convince someone else that all pit bulls are bad and it goes from there.its all in how they are raised.and any dog can be raised mean.

Sadly, this is true, not just in Denmark. They are also not allowed in Germany.
I do not think the US should do the same. There are many places that do not allow pitbulls, here in the US already.
I have two American Pit Bull Terriers, that will readily listen to commands from my 2 year old daughter and 4 year old son.

Ban stupid people, not dogs! people don't realize that pit bulls make up only 1.8% of our nations dog bites, #1-Golden Retriever, go figure! #2 cocker spaniel and #3 black lab......there goes the family dog right? how many people do guns kill a year? how many people die from tabacco use, alcohol related illnesses and accidents? then compare those outrageous numbers to 3, 3 people die per year from a pit attack.....and the DOG is being banned for what reason?!?!?
