I'd take him to the dr. if he's not better in a couple of days.....my son and several friends' children have had croup these last couple of weeks. It's really going around and is highly contagious. There is a prescription cough syrup that works pretty good. It's called Levall and it has a mild narcotic in it so the poor kid can get some much needed rest. Good luck!

Cough suppressants are not recommended for children under the age of 6 years old. Consult a pharmacist.

my daughter has the same kind of cough--only alot worse, she has the croup--her breathing is raspy and shallow also--if it is the croup, you need to have moist air--a humidifier tent, or hot steamy shower and keep him breathing the steam for about 15 min, then immediatly take him into cooler air and that will help--cough medicines dont work for the croup--my daughter was so bad i had to taqke her to the ER, they gave her a breathing treatment, and anitbiotics in case is is bacterial croup...anyway try moist air, followed by cool air--also when it gets worse at night, try taking him outside or by an open window in the cooler air for 10 minutes or so, that will help relieve it...popsicles also for the soreness--if it doesnt start getting better in a couple days, take him into the er or doctor for treatment the croup can be viral or bacterial if its bacterial he needs antibiotics....my son had the same thing a couple days before my daughter and he got over his in 2 days...i run the humidifier in my daughters room all the time to keep the air moist, lots of rest, and tylenol...if it is the croup dont give him any cough meds, they dont work and you aree just over medicating him and building an immunity....keep cold juice or water readily available for him through the night when he wakes up and his throat is really dry--my daughter is already getting over hers with the humidifier--i also happen to have a nebulizer here at home so i am able to give her breathing treatments (if you have one, use a saline solution instead of meds) otherwise, humidifier, and steam from the shower---and i cant emphasize this enough--no meds but tylenol or acetamedaphine--they do not work for ther croup....

Your son should see a doctor to find out the cause of the cough. The doctor can recommend a good product to use and tell you the correct dosage for his age and weight.

You may want to take him to the Dr.'s as this sounds like it could be the whooping cough which in that case he would need an antibiotic. Robitussin DM works great for coughs. Good Luck!!

Robitussin Pediatric dose for a 16month is 1/2 teaspoon every 6-8 hours. Good luck and remember if it persists for over a week you need to take him to the doctor.

i would give him a dose of triaminic for cough, but only after you check with your child's doctor for correct dosing information. the other thing that works really well is sitting in a very steamy bathroom for about 15-20 minutes. you can also put a cool mist humidifier in his room. make sure it's not a steam humidifier because they tend to increase fungal and bacterial growth.

You should get a humidifier for your son's room. It will help moisturize his nasal and throat passages - this will ease the throat.
Believe it or not, lavender oil is an expectorant (suppresses coughs). Giving him a bath with lavender oil (Johnson & Johnson makes a lavender scented baby wash) or spritzing the room with lavender linen spray will also help.
