I see pictures of dogs in sweaters from time to time, and I have to wonder: is it even necessary? Don't their coats keep them wrong? Am I asking a ludicously obvious question?

Actually yes there is LOL Some dogs don't have an undercoat, for example the Doberman Pinscher, so a coat or sweater may help keep them warm when out of doors in a cold enviroment. Then there are also the hairless breed, like the Chinese Crested, that really need help staying warm! Ohhh and then there are the people who have issues within themselves and dress their dogs up and treat them as people.

So yes, in some cases it is necessary and other times not. The ones that have a thick coat and live in Miami and still wear sweaters there isn't an issue with the dog just the owner. <<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Many smaller dogs or dogs with not a lot of fur that live in colder climates NEED coats and sweaters when it gets cold. if you have a husky they have enough fur but a little dog like a terrier with short hair will need a coat if it is -20 C out!
Dogs also should wear boots in the winter when they start putting salt down on the roads. This goes for ALL types of dogs.
The dogs paws are sensitive and when they come in they will clean their paws ingesting the salts. Not good.
So yes, for many dogs during the cold weather it is important for them to get bundled up!

Absolutely! If a dog is normally indoors, and especially if it is small, it will suffer from the cold, just as humans do..A Chihuahua should wear a sweater or coat, any time that the owner does..

It was different in the days when dogs were left out most of the time..as they became acclimated, and grew sufficient coat to deal with the cold..However, if the environment is telling a dog that they are in the tropics, but suddenly, outside they are in Alaska..a coat or sweater is it order..

Also, so many owners have their dogs clipped..so they certainly don't have the coat that was given them to deal with extreme temperatures..

the hairless breeds will die without some protection from the elements..

I bought rain gear for my little mutt for this winter..as she walks, just before bedtime, and neither of us want her wet all night..

I think dog sweaters look ridiculous.

however, SOME BREEDS have very short coats and get very cold in the winter. A coat or sweater helps them able to withstand walks in cold weather. Dogs like Weimaraners, Grey Hounds, Great Danes - have very short coats and can get very cold in the winter.

There are some dogs that I think need a little help, like small short haired dogs, but for the most part they could go without....Mine do all the time....my hunting dogs never get sweaters and they run through a foot of snow every weekend when we hunt. But Like I said....there are some dogs that are a little more fragile and probly do need something extra.

Well, with some breeds of dog : the smaller ones, their coats are not warm enough, so they need sweaters. With others, their owners just do it to make them look 'pretty', which I find to be very sad. Except for on Halloween that is...

Just as you wouldnt expect a lion to survive in Alaska's cold winter in spite of its fur, some dogs short coats provide little protection from the cold. Yes, they occasionally need a sweater.

My dog is greatly affected by temperature changes and she needs to have a sweater when the weather turns cold.

I say Yes- if the dog is cold. I have a 15 year old poodle who I put sweaters on because she gets cold very easily. But I'd never put one on my German Sheperd.
