The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants are breastfed exclusively for 6 months, and receive no milk substitutes till 12 months, and that mothers continue to breastfeed after that for as long as they enjoy it. The World Health Organization recommends that infants nurse, here and worldwide, for a minimum of two years.

My wife has been breastfeeding our son for almost 4 months now. She's going to ween him around the end of the year though.

My son is now 3. but, I nursed him until he was over 2 1/2 years old. I am almost 6 months pregnant with our 2nd son. And I plan to nurse him until he wants to stop. It is the best thing for them.

Yep, still bfing my almost 20 month old. Only once a day to get him to go down for a nap. I'm 15 weeks pregnant so I do have a few more months to totally wean him. I prefer not to have 2 on my boob at once, lol :)

My friend still breastfeeds her son at over 2 years and has no intention of giving up. I gave up with both of mine at 6 weeks as I couldn't stand it and found it a miserable experience.

I personally only breastfed my three for 6 months each. But a friend of mine breastfed for 23 months (I found it disturbing to hear her say "That one's empty" and move to the other) But I think it's a personal thing for you to decide.

I am not currently breast feeding since my kids are now 27, 25, 21, and 9. I did breast feed them all, though. I breast fed my youngest until she self-weaned herself at 14 months. It was too soon for me, but she stopped wanting to.

I started cutting down on my daughter's feedings at 9 months, my plan was to have her weaned within a month of turning one. At 11 1/2 months we were down to a feeding before bed, and one night she just stopped wanting it. I have had friends who nursed longer, but it wasn't for me. Good for you to want to provide a healthy start for your baby!
