Hi,

I need to have glasses made (not sunglasses) cause I have a small 5° defect at one eye.
Where should I go?
What is the process?
Is there any store/chain you would recommend me? (good quality, cheap, promotion...)

It is a simple question, but I am French, I live in Ohio and I don't know how things are done in here.

Thanks!

So I need:

First a prescription from an optometrist
Then going to a "glass store" to have it made.

Is it right?

I don't know what your defect means, so I'll tell you what I know:

a) you can usually buy reading glasses over the counter at any local drug store, convenience store, or discount chain...like Wal-Mart

b) If it's NOT magnification that you need, you will have to make an appointment with a local eye doctor. Most Wal-Mart stores have them, or you can look in the yellow pages under Optometry/Opthalmology.
You can usually have an initial eye exam done for around $80, sometimes as much as $120, but I haven't seen any that high personally. After that, you'll pick frames, and you'll usually end up spending around $300 total for the exam & glasses. These figures are WITHOUT insurance.
Call around to all the offices in your area and ask about their rates & whether or not they have any specials or discounts. Like there are some places where you can get 2 sets of frames for the price of one, or they'll have a new patient/customer discount, things like that.
If you take the time to investigate, you have a better chance of getting a good deal.

Most places will have you order your frames after the eye exam. If they don't, then they will refer you to a place where you should pick them up. I don't think you'd have to take the prescription somewhere else yourself. I think they'll just make arrangements to have them done right there where you have your exam, then pick them up when they're done.

I am an optician. Go to a private practice Dr. for a comprehensive exam. They will be able to guide you in the right direction to select a frame and options for your lenses. Private practice drs are more pricey, but they are definatley worth it.
Usually the optician should let you know what frame would work with your perscription and your lifestlye. Have the most stylish optician in the office help you. (They usually know what are the current styles).
Try not to go to the quikie "glasses in a an hour" places. You truly get what you pay for.
Good Luck!

There are optometry clinics all of the city, walk in with the prescription at hand or have another eye exam to warrant the need for glasses. The optometrist is there to help you.

Yes, see an optomtrist for an exam and prescription.

Then go to $39 glasses and order some STURDY glasses CHEAP. They are on the net at:

http://www.39dollarglasses.com

the only tricky part about getting glasses over the internet is that you have to measure the distance between your eyes (center of pupil to center of pupil) in millimeters and report that when you order glasses. Email me if you get confused. Mon grandpere, it etait Francois-Canadien. Je vous aiderai si c'est necessaire.

I get all my glasses at 39dollarglasses. They are about 1/3 the cost of getting them in person.
