A USB flash drive contains an amount of storage space which can be plugged into any USB port on any USB-enabled windows system. It allows VERY quick transfer of files, and the sticks go up to 4GB in storage size, though that size is fairly expensive.

The downside to the USB Flash Drive is that if the computer des not have Windows XP, the OS might not immediately recognize and install the drivers for the Drive. Even then, you can still get the drivers from the Drive manufacturer's website.

USB Flash Drives are faster than disk drives, more accessible than Optical Discs, and many can store even as much as a DVD in data.

Flash drives have basically replaced floppy disk, but I don't think you can boot a computer to them like you can to a floppy. They come in a variety of sizes starting from 128 Mb and going all the way up to 8G. Although, there are also mini 8G hard disk drives, which are also a USB device and I believe they work differently than flash drives, so if it's a flash drive you want you should be careful of which one you buy. They also come in different styles. There is the conventional looking ones and then there are the novelty ones. You can even buy a watch with a USB flash drive in it.

USB flash drives can be used to carry your data between home and work, home and school, or even to a client or from a client. USB Drives also cross different platforms such as Linux, Mac OS, Windows 98 and XP. All the computer needs is a USB port, the drivers to support your device, and the files you have on the USB device.

I have used my USB flash drive to back up my data and use it on one of my other computers, while my notebook was in the shop for service.

They are small about the size of an adult's thumb. Hence it also goes by the name thumb drive.

It can hold data, back up your data. Portable. Also it is secure so that you do not have to keep the data on your hard drive. You can take it with you wherever you go. Plug it into another USB, and viola....!! you have your data available.

It is like carrying a bunch of floppy disks. Those days are gone. Now the flash drives can hold (depending on what you buy) , anywhere from 128 Kb to all the way to 2 or even 4 GB. It neatly fits in your clutch purse or your shirt pocket.

The size of flash drive you buy is dependant on how thick is your wallet. (BTW, what's in your wallet?) If I were you, I will buy a 2 GB. It holds a lot of data.

USB flash drives are NAND-type flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB interface. They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable. Memory capacity typically ranges from 8 megabytes to 8 gigabytes.

USB flash drives have several advantages over other portable storage devices, particularly the floppy disk. They are generally faster, hold more data, and are considered more reliable (due to their lack of moving parts) than floppy disks. These types of drives use the USB mass storage standard, supported natively by modern operating systems such as Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows XP.

It's a portable, removeable chunk of memory. Plug it in to a USB port, and it looks like another drive to the system. You can copy stuff there using the explorer just like you would any other drive, whether local or network. It's handy to be able to carry work with you from system to system. A network admin I know carries all the common drivers he needs on his, as well as basic virus and adware scan programs.
