sal m's answer might confuse you, as Blu-Ray players are altogether different from HD-DVD players. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are two competing high-definition disc formats.

Anyway, the short answer is no--HD-DVD's can NOT play on regular DVD players (nor Blu-Ray players). Some HD-DVD's are "flipper" discs that are HD-DVD on one side and DVD on the other, but those titles are few and far in between.

HD-DVDS discs cannot play on standard dvd players. The hddvd has different ways of reading than the normal dvds. try to get a blu-ray dvd player.

I agree with part of what was said. If you can wait then i suggest doing so. If 500 bucks is no big deal then buy one Most hd dvd discs may not play in your regular player but your regular disc will play in your HD player. There is talk about dual format disc players and also companies releasing all there titles on both formats so that neither choice is a loser but I'm waiting. As for Blue Ray or HDDVD both players seem to have to many gllitches for me to choose.

Don't bother buying an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
They are competing like VHS and Beta did in the 70's but by the time one wins out, no one will use little disks any more. Everything will be downloaded to your Media PC and stored on a hard drive.
I am already putting my movies on a RAID hard drive array, Takes up less space and they are more easily accessible.

Usually no, but some HD-DVD discs will have two versions recorded, botH HD and standard, and these can be played on any player.
