Mine does that to and did it this morning as well. It drives me crazy. I moved the litter box and so far, so good. It seems they picked where "they" wanted it!

Many cats will rebel.
If something has changed in your house it could be a reason why they are now doing this.
Where they ok before and it just started? Look at what has changed.
If they were always like this could just be they don't understand completely the idea of what the little box is.
Some cats wont use the litter box if it is TOO clean also. if they seem to use it when it is more messy maybe leave a bit of .. a mess behind when you clean it out.
I doubt it but maybe they have a urine infection? Again I am thinking it is rebelling. If someone comes around they do not like they could also do this.
Good Luck!

Well the spare room carpet now has their scent on it so the first thing you wanna do is buy a product that will get rid of the urine scent. I'd suggest looking in a pet store...they have lots of different things you can use.
As to why the cats are peeing there in the first place, there are many different reasons. They could be angry with you, one cat could be using the litter box while another needs it, or something could be scaring them away from it. Like if you are vacuuming by it and they have to go.....

I got a 4 yr old SPCA cat a couple of months ago. She was litter trained of course. I noticed one day she pooed in her bed, so we cleaned it and she hasn't done that again. I think she wanted attention that night. Then a week later she peed on our carpet upstairs, her litterbox is downstairs. Then I noticed she was peeing on the couch and chair downstairs which is 10 ft away from her litterbox. Took her to the vet for a urinanalysis. She has crystals in her urine so she has been put on Dissolution food for 3 months which will absorb the crystals and make them go away. Not using the litterbox is a sign that kitty might have a urinary track infection, so get them checked out. Clean the spot REALLY good so kitty won't go back to that spot. Nature's Miracle is supposed to work, I used that, dish detergent, Shout, and sprayed the carpet with Febreeze, and sprayed a bottle of stuff that keeps pets away from spots you don't want them, found at pet store. I put tinfoil over the carpet and on the couch and chair. Cats don't like tinfoil. I washed the couch cushions in the bathtub and am getting them professionally cleaned this week, along with the couch and chair.

I have a 7 week old kitten that I trained for the litter box before the others because I planned on keeping her. At first she did great, then she started wetting my bed on top of my husband almost every night. In the wee hours of the morning my hubby would jump up from the bed where there was a wet spot and we'd have to change the sheets, sometimes twice a night. I've caught her almost going in the corner by the tub and I would kind of "uh huh" at her and she would run jump in her litter box. I had planned on getting rid of her last weekend if she didn't straighten out. I decided for the rest of the week to take her to her litter box just before bed, she'd use it, then sleep in the bed and not wet there all week or anyplace else. I think I've gotten her trained properly now. Depending on the age of your cat, it could be that they weren't propertly trained in the first place and no one has gotten on to them about where they go. You need to keep a close eye on your kitty and if you catch them going someplace other than the littler box, pop their behind and put them in their box.

If you have more than one cat, you're supposed to have 1 box for each cat. Do you? That may be the problem. If 2 cats have to share 1 box, there's no way you can keep it clean enough as far as they're concerned. I have 2 cats and 2 boxes. I scoop them out once in the morning and then again in the evening. Then once a week, I empty them completley out, and scrub them out with hot, soapy water. Cats are very clean creatures and they want their boxes to be clean too.

at the pet stores they sell a spray that you can spray on the rug and they should stop peeing there. also, even though you clean it every day they may still be able to smell it. if you sprinkle a little baking soda on it every time you clean it, that should absorb the smell.

If it's got their poopy in it, they will go elsewhere. Always keep it scooped out.
