Tae Kwon Do is 65% kicks, 30% hands, and 5% self-defense(unrealistic in most schools, unless your instructor has cross- trained in another art and let it influence the self-defense). TKD has situations where it is very effective, but a street fight is not one of them, due to the fact that a majority of fights end up on the ground.

At my school, we do practice the blocks, punches, and kicks- yes, the fancy stuff too, :-) -but we focus more on the basic techniques, like roundhouse and back kicks. I don't think we waste too much time on the fancy kicks; I mean, my instructor is a practical guy- he lets us know what will work and what will not, and he emphasizes timing and speed. We have also learned some throws and counters to throws, some chokeholds, some grappling, etc., although we don't practice that very often. IWhile my TKD school does teach Hapkido and Beksudo, it is primarily a Tae Kwon Do school, so obviously it would focus more on TKD techniques.

Of course they are, but can you use the technique at the right time is the important thing here...
That's why ppl learning taekwondo are trained repeatedly of what actions to be taken in the different situations.
Of course you won't be countering a kick from, say your bro who's trying to test your "skills".
But when time arises...

All kicks and punches, no grappling at all. What we learn is effective for what it is. It's somewhat similar to kickboxing. If someone gets us on the ground, we have no formal training in that, so we are at a disadvantage.
