Unfortunately the stigma that hovers over mental illnesses is so prevalent that many don't seek help based on how others might judge them. Compound that with the ongoing concerns about negative side effects of the medications that are recommended, (based on lawsuits over suicides); doesn't seem very hopeful for anyone seeking treatment.
Additional therapy is usually recommended along with medication for depression, and some people are limited financially (no health plan, or can't pay for sessions), and even scheduling (can't make time for appointment) can prevent a person from utilizing all the suggested treatment options.
If anyone is experiencing symptoms, and wants treatment, make an appointment with a doctor. Be diligent with your treatment, (what works, what isn't) and become an educated patient. Research online about support groups, treatment plans, alternative treatments, and find the regiment that is right for you.
I wish you well and luck on this matter, and best of health.

Often people with depression don't seek help because they are depressed!!! Depression leaves people feeling hopeless and they don't think anything can be done to make life better. The nature of the disease prevents people from seeking treatment. It's important for friends and family members to try to help get victims of depression the treatment they need.

some people dont even realise they are depressed. may just see it has having a low patch. or some people are scared to open up to other people and worry too many questions maybe asked that they dont want to share.
i think if a person is experiencing signs of depression it is best to see someone about it and get help. if someone is too scared to go on their own maybe bring along a friend or family member.
they can then recieve treatment for the condition and extra help with support groups depending on what is actually causing the depression.
everyone is different so i expect there are many reasons why people dont seek out treatment.

Some people can't afford to seek help, others may feel like it's going to pass or that they can get through it.
For people that are experiencing depression, they should seek help. Also, try to eat healthy, exercise, ect. Find something they like to do, maybe a hobby.

Is you leg broke? Most people can see it. Right? Well, no one wants help for a mind problem suffering from depression. No one can see that. Right? Men really have a hard time. I am on Welbutrin, makes me feel great in the morning. I am not depressed or sad, but my body is depressed: means the body can't even get up in the morning. Good luck to you, Kitty

take it from me, maybe they don't realize that it is actually treatable. it's hard for people to step up and realize they've got depression because, unlike other diseases, many people don't understand depression in the first place....people don't realize how serious it is. some people with depression are afraid to get help. I know I was. i kept worrying too much about what others thought of me, how *they* would react if i told them i have depression. i was too worried about what others would think of me, bottom line....instead of worrying about my own health. but once it got out of control, my dog (whom was my best friend) passed away unexpectedly, and i realized i couldn't take it anymore....that's when i got help.
many people with major depression are afraid of what others may think of them. patients with depression don't want to seem weak. that's why it's difficult to reach out for help. too many people are afraid of what others think.
others think they can just "wish it away" or handle the depression on their own . that's what i did too (ha). however, that's a big slap in the face because there is no way to treat a serious medical condition such as depression, by itself. but then it depends on how severe the depression is. if it's not as severe, it's "easier" for a person to treat it, to some extent. if it's severe, like Major Depression, then it's impossible to treat without medication and/or therapy. if they are experience symptoms of depression, they should seek help right away.
hope i helped you some, i know this is kinda long.

Listen you need to realize that living is for you. You need to enjoy yourself and think of what makes you happy. If you aren't so close to your family or friends take up a hobby or a sport that keeps you entertained. Set a goal and aachieve. Make there be a point for your life. Whatever you do try to enjoy life to the fullest. Good luck.
