They do that in China too. I have known a few people who have gone to China to adopt these unwanted girls. I do think it is terrible, but still remain pro-choice. I could never abort for that reason, and think it is disgusting. Same thing as people using abortion as a form of birth control. I managed to avoid getting pregnant for 10 years using the pill and condoms when I was not on the pill. I guess I feel it is none of my business what other people do, they are the ones who have to live with their decision, not me.

It's awful and it's going to hurt the country later when there aren't enough women for all the men. It's also going to result in more rape and trafficking of women, like they are cattle. Unfortunately, there is such societal pressure on Indian women to have boys that they get forced into these kinds of abortions by their husbands and families. So, I don't see how this can be compared to the pro-choice fight. It doesn't seem like much of a choice in my opinion.
And, allow me to straighten you out... pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion. I'm avidly pro-choice (and a parent of two kids), but have never had an abortion, nor do I think I'd ever be able to. I would, however, like that choice to be mine. The government and the religious fanatics need to mind their own business. I'll allow God to judge me when the time comes, thank you very much.

Women are more expensive. But that's no reason to be aborting them. Apart from moral issues, it will skew the birth ratio and in 25 years time, it's going to be hard to find wives. Also what these women probably don't realize is that it is dangerous to have multiple abortions. India has so many problems though it's very hard for us on the outside to judge them and their choices. For example, 17,000 farmers committed suicide in 2003 due to overwhelming debt from crop failures. In some ways though, aborting a fetus is better than just abandoning a healthy live baby girl - as has happened in the past in China and other countries.

I am a male, and happen to think choosing an abortion is a poor choice. Culturally India is much different then the US. It would definitely reduce the population of women activists..
It is abhorent that people assume because they can choose abortion they should do it. I think perhaps in cases of rape, incest or potential death of the mother as the result or bring a baby to term ti should remain an option in the 1st trimester.
Life has a way of happening. India is frout with cultural wierdness to begin with what's one more.. Ancient Roman's and Greeks used to leave baby girls outside the city walls for the dogs to eat. It's tragic and heinous. I don't think vacuum sucking a fetus out of a mothers womb is any less heinous because she can choose it.
Emphasis needs to be on preventing pregnancies in 3rd world nations where there is the blight of population.. Abortion should not be used as population or birth control.. Abortion advocates ala Margaret Sanger advocate Hitlerian style genocide.. Yet, they don't want to be equated with the worst of the 20th century but their actions are no different then Mengala in Auswitz.
Tragic, I grew up in the sixties, I was a child of an RN who witnessed coat hanger abortions. I had physical deformities that would have made me a candidate to be selectively aborted. Thankfully, my mother chose to have me.

I am pro choice but i do not agee with using abortion as a means of birth control or gender selection. I do however agree with it if the pregnancy is a result of rape, if the mother is too young and cannot care for the pregnancy or child, if there are financial issues that result in the mother being unable to care for herself or baby, if the mother has an addiction or mental illness or if pretection was used and you still got pregnant. But in no way is it right to abort if it wasnt what you wanted. I wanted a boy when i first got pregnant and i found out at 24 weeks that i was having a girl. I couldnt imagine aborting her because she is a girl. I love her more then ever expected and couldnt be happier.

This is in another country. Especially in countries that are over populated. I don't agree with aborting a child because of their sex. I don't agree with forcing a person to have an abortion or not having one. In China they have done this for years. There it is not because they are expensive--it is because they will produce more women continuing the overpopulation cycle. I'm not saying it's right but that the reason. I would really like to see the research about India. I would like to see where it says in India women are considered more "expensive." I'm not saying you aren't being truthful--I just want to see the facts.
I am pro-choice. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion. Pro-choice is to choose to get an abortion or not. Therefore I don't believe in this case (were women are being forced to get abortions whether they like it or not) it is right.
Thanks for putting that up!

Sounds like there is a need to change the underlying sexist nature of the society. A complex problem that goes far beyond the issue of abortion.
Changing the abortion laws in an effort to force families to place a higher value on female children would be like putting a band-aid on cancer...

That's awful! It's one thing if you have an abortion because you're really young, or just can't take care of the baby, but to be having an abortion after abortion just because it is not the right gender sounds sick and wrong to me!

Disgusting YES -- New, unfortunately NO -- has been going on forever. Some oriental cultures do the same. I don't believe it is because the girls are more expensive -- it is that they are considered useless - only a true man can father a boy. I know BS, BS, BS!!!

Considering the HIV rate in India, it's at least preventing the fetus' from living horrible lives due to the lack of sex education there.
